KY: High School Prayer Axed After Muslim Complaint
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS
SHELBYVILLE - The principal of Shelby County High School said the school will not have formal prayer at graduation exercises next month after receiving a complaint from a student and the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky.
Principal Gary Kidwell met Monday with the Board of Education and a lawyer as residents held a prayer vigil outside. Tuesday, Kidwell said the school will break from the tradition of student-led invocations and benedictions at graduation June 2.
The school "will be compliant with the law and also provide a respectful and dignified program for all students," he said.
Traditional prayers at a school banquet and an awards ceremony also will not be held, he said.
Last week, a court ordered a Russell County High School student who had been designated to pray at graduation not to do so. Students rose on their own and recited the Lord's Prayer during the principal's remarks. The student who had been designated to lead the prayer included religious messages in her remarks to graduates.
Arshiya Saiyed, 17, who is Muslim, identified herself Tuesday as the Shelby County student who filed the ACLU complaint. She said other students share her view, a contention echoed by Kidwell.
Arshiya said she understands that student speakers at Shelby County also might include a prayer in their remarks, but she hopes they will respect her objections to the formal prayer.

And they wonder why so many Americans don't appreciate them being here. This is ONE reason.

The school "will be compliant with the law and also provide a respectful and dignified program for all students," he (Principal Gary Kidwell) said. Not compliant with the law but compliant with the demands of the ACLU and a lawless judge.

All christians, regardless of denomination, know the Lord's Prayer ("tresspasses" vs. "sins", being the only difference).Presbyterians say debts & debtors because any good Scotsman would rather be forgiven his debts than his trespasses.

How muslims treat other when they are in power...Good post. This is a good example of how muslims and the ACLU use our courts and our tax dollars to suppress our God-given freedoms.

Word should be passed around secretly to gather at another location for ceremonies and leave the diaperhead to show up at school and nobody there.

This is typical with such a great emphasis on multiculturalism in this society. It's like in a mixed marriage where typically the children are raised with no religious emphasis in order to keep it "neutral" and avoid conflict.
The country is slowly becoming secular as if secular is a neutral and more objective position....as if secularism is a better foundation for this land than the real source for justice and law which is rooted in Judeo-Christian principles. Principles that even Muslims and atheists enjoy every day I must add. Well, maybe not. However, they will use these principles in order to take them away. They need them, for a while anyway.
Also, the attorneys, who supposedly practice law, who take cases like this. They fail to look at the big picture. They don't see the impact it will have on society in general. Such attorneys are only concerned with making the hours for the law firm and getting the billing. They couldn't care less about the damage they do to the foundation of this nation from their legal wake.
Muslims are a smart people. They have been taking countries for 1,400 years. This is nothing new. It's an Islamic manifest destiny.

"...she hopes they will respect her objections to the formal prayer."She doesn't want "respect" for her objections--she is not being forced to pray--she wants submission to her god.
To: sageb1
Rather ironic, isn't? Texas High School Agrees to Stop Banning Muslim Students' Prayers Not at all. There's a difference between individuals praying and the whole class being led in prayer.
To: SQUID
"They have been taking countries for 1,400 years."
And then destroying them.
