The Silver City Town Council has adopted a resolution calling for the federal government to form a U.S. Department of Peace.
The council voted 3-1 Tuesday night in favor of the resolution, which asks Congress to establish a Cabinet-level department geared toward peaceful resolution of conflicts around the world.
A supporter of the resolution argued that the council should consider measures that aren't focused strictly on local issues.
''A lot of polls lately show people have lost faith in the upper levels of government,'' Larry Weiss of Silver City said. ''The one government body that's retained trust is the local body
The resolution encourages Sens. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and Pete Domenici, R-N.M., and Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M. whose district includes Silver City to sign on as sponsors of a measure introduced in Congress last year for a Department of Peace.
The resolution says such a department will benefit the community ''by holding peace as an organizing principle for the American society, which will change the tone of society'' and by development programs that will lead to changes in domestic violence and violence with guns, in schools and against minority groups.

Think we should give them all a "group hug".
What planet did this town fall off of?
My brother lives in Silver city, he'll get a kick out of this.
Department of Peace, Love, Warm Puppies and Navel Contemplation.
I think you should tell your brother that he needs to move out of this town, quickly.
Bring back the War Department...
PING
LOL! This sounds like something the "Progressive Dane" communists from Madison, WI would sign on to.
I'll ping you if they decide to jump on this bandwagon. I'm going to e-mail this article to Austin King while I'm at it, LOL! Maybe it will distract him from his 'Mandatory Paid Sick Leave' for the workers in 'The Worker's Paradise' that is Madistan.
It'll be a pity when the Moonbats put the UN out of business because aren't they doing that job now? (Not) But, I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks, academia. Too many normies being perved by International Relations and Conflict Resolution courses... sigh...
(What a waste of time, energy, money and God-given common sense)
"U.S. Department of Peace."
Already been done. It was the "U.S. Department of Piece" and it had one member. Bill Clinton. ;)
We got one, it is called the Dept. Of Defense.
What a shame. Silver City is a pretty little college town in western N.M. that has been infiltrated by the rats.
"wakka...wakka...wakka..."
He is so ignorant of politics, he would have no idea what I was talking about.
I was stretching the truth when I said he would get a kick out of it.
In reality he will be puzzled by it, or any reaction to it.
For years Silver City was a nice little ranching and mining community. A pretty redneck town for years. As mines began to close and miners moved on I noticed moonbats were moving in and things went downhill in a hurry. The outer edges of town still seem to be inhabited by fairly normal folk, but downtown is moonbat hollow.
It's been over twenty years since I've been in that area of the state. Always liked the area, too bad the "wrong" element moved in!
