Scientists at Duke and Rutgers universities have developed a mathematical framework they say will enable astronomers to test a new five-dimensional theory of gravity that competes with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.
Charles R. Keeton of Rutgers and Arlie O. Petters of Duke base their work on a recent theory called the type II Randall-Sundrum braneworld gravity model. The theory holds that the visible universe is a membrane (hence "braneworld") embedded within a larger universe, much like a strand of filmy seaweed floating in the ocean. The "braneworld universe" has five dimensions -- four spatial dimensions plus time -- compared with the four dimensions -- three spatial, plus time -- laid out in the General Theory of Relativity.
The framework Keeton and Petters developed predicts certain cosmological effects that, if observed, should help scientists validate the braneworld theory. The observations, they said, should be possible with satellites scheduled to launch in the next few years.
If the braneworld theory proves to be true, "this would upset the applecart," Petters said. "It would confirm that there is a fourth dimension to space, which would create a philosophical shift in our understanding of the natural world."
~snip~ "When we estimated how far braneworld black holes might be from Earth, we were surprised to find that the nearest ones would lie well inside Pluto's orbit," Keeton said.
Petters added, "If braneworld black holes form even 1 percent of the dark matter in our part of the galaxy -- a cautious assumption -- there should be several thousand braneworld black holes in our solar system."

That looks downright Lorentzian ... how transforming!
Thanks for the ping!
Really?
What if there is no one around to see it?
Besides....matter can neither be created or destroyed.
The psychological/perceptual arrow of time
This is the most obvious arrow in human experience: We feel as if we are travelling from the past to the future; we perceive and remember the past and not the future (although sometimes these are treated as two different phenomena). However, because the workings of the mind are so complex and little understood, it is not obvious how the physical arrows of time contribute to this perception. It may be that learning to generate the causes needed to produce desired effects embedded the causal arrow in our perception.
It has also been argued that the arrow of time as we perceive it results from the influence of the second law of thermodynamics on the evolution of the brain, so that the psychological arrow follows from the thermodynamic. To remember something, our memory goes from a disordered state to a more ordered one, or from one ordered state to another. To ensure that the new state is the correct one, energy must be used to perform the work and this increases the disorder in the rest of the universe. There is always a greater increase in disorder than the amount of order gained in our memory, thus the arrow of time in which we remember things is in the same direction as that in which the disorder of the universe increases.
The link between this arrow of time and the thermodynamic arrow of time is best understood if we remember that the Second Law of Thermodynamics dictates that correlations between different parts of a system will be increased towards the future (rather than towards the past). Since memory is correlations between our brain cells (or computer bits) and the outer world, it is obvious why memory should be created as time passes (towards the future) rather than vice versa (towards the past). Additionally, our deeds may affect the future but not the past because affecting the outer world means to create correlations between ourselves (our bodies or brains) and the outer world.
Keep in mind that reality is warped, that makes it easier to understand.

So that's what keeps getting the odd sock out of the dryer...
Try this. A point is a "no-dimensional" object. A line is a one-dimensional object, a square is a two-dimensional object and a cube is a three-dimentional object.
Now, the point is the shadow of the line if the line is viewed end-on. The line is the shadow of the square edge-on and the square is the shadow of the cube.
Q. The cube is the shadow of what?
A. A four dimensional object
Movement of being from one dimension to another may only be done absent restraints of time, thus absent physical matter. It's a realm, a condition of being many call the "spiritual world". This state is referred to in this verse of scripture: "That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past."
If something lived in the 4th dimension and had 4th dimension perception, it could see us while we couldn't see it, unless it crossed into our line of perception?
Does any critter exist in only the 2nd or 1st dimension that we can perceive that cannot percieve us?
I don't think so. Time is part of the created physical realm just as you and I are as long as we have a physical body.
In the scriptures it is written, "God said, ''Let there be...''" and it was and whatever came into physical being became bound to his law of time at that moment. Remember, the scriptures are written from a physical being's perspective - a perspective limited by time.

THAT'S what's wrong with FreeRepublic!....we need another dimension! (or two)
(it's going to be one of those Fridays....)

The "realization" of linear time is a perception of humans...or you might say one of the characteristics of "being" human. It is our particular level of consciousness that allows time to be viewed as such.
"Time is part of the created physical realm just as you and I are as long as we have a physical body."
So are you saying that time ceases to exist once we have died?
If a being existed in the 4th dimension and were able to come back into our dimension it would appear as if this being had supernatural powers....walking through walls, fire, rock...etc....
Sure you can divored time from 3D space. Simple math in 3 planes.
No, not actually "ceases to exist". In essence, its relevance has been broken by one's entry into the spirit realm. Time only has an effect on matter which has physical mass, whether the mass is significant or not. Once a being has "passed" into the spiritual realm, time is of no more consequence.
That is why, I believe, the scriptural discription of heaven has the appearance of translucent objects and colors which are unimaginable within the physical realm. Time governs light's wavelengths and the varying visible lightwaves produce our ability to "see" or perceive color. Without the restriction of time, many other unknown colors may become "visable" - or should we say "perceivable" and "solids" would become permeable.
