WASHINGTON -- Sen. Christopher Dodd would need loads of money and a sharper political profile to emerge from the crowded Democratic pack as a legitimate 2008 presidential contender, according to political analysts.
"He's starting from scratch," said Merle Black, a political science professor at Emory University in Atlanta. "It's a long way from Connecticut to the White House."
"I'm going to go out and talk about myself," Dodd said. "I'm not going to talk about who else is running. I think, frankly, that's one of the problems of politics."
The senator conceded fundraising will be a "big question" for his candidacy.
Dodd, in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, said he's "optimistic" he can win enough money and support to be a credible candidate, although he won't decide on a White House run until early next year.
"I think maybe the public is ready for someone who can actually bring people together ... I've authored a lot of landmark legislation," said Dodd, D-Conn., citing his experience forging bipartisan compromises on major bills such as family and medical leave and child care.
The five-term senator said he plans to start visiting key primary states as early as next month. He said he's spoken recently with political people from South Carolina, Georgia, Iowa, California, Minnesota and New Hampshire.

AP is running a new Dodd piece every day. Are they trying to create interest for a "not Hillery" candidate?

His dad, Thomas Dodd, was censured as a Senator in about 1967, I believe.
