- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.
And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

PING! Your services are needed in this thread, sir.
Every time she makes a pronouncement, it is as though we travel backwards in some sort of evil time warp.
I keep expecting that some tattered diseased and long lost group of Yippies will surface squealing about "rights".
This is a very shallow woman indeed.
Didn't they just raise the speed limit in West Texas to 80mph?
Oh boy, I want to see Hitlery in a camoflage suit ala Kerry, duck hunting to prove she's a real man, er, woman...
Hillary the genious does not seem to understand that that technology applies to the pre 90's technology. The new cars have a different gearing to engine ratio so they can run at 2000 rpm at 75 miles an hour. The gas loss comes from city driving so the 55 number means nothing. What a dope.
(Denny Crane: "Every one should carry a gun strapped to their waist. We need more - not less guns.")
Well, it could have been the Ford years, but I'm pretty sure it was in the Carter years.
Does anybody have pictures of Hillary in her various modes of transportation, such SUV, limousine, airplane.
And we are the ones that have to save gas! What a f*n joke.
Um, this has been tried and failed miserably. I remember speed limits going down to 55 but it didn't take long to go right back up. No one is going to go 55 on the expressway. Geez, barely anyone goes the posted speed as it is.
For someone that is suppose to be a political genius with one foot in the white house door(according to the MSM), Hillary seems to be making a lot of down right stupid political mistakes. I have a feeling that just like last week where she said young people were shiftless and lazy, then quickly backtracked, she will also be quickly backtracking when she finds out how unpopular this idea will be.
FYI: Nixon created the double nickel speed limit.
Still, I can't drive 55, and I don't see the need to make CB's, Radar detectors, and hair trigger braking a necessity on the nations highways.
Let it flow, let it flow, let it flow....
SCREW THAT!!!!
i can't even slow down to 65!!
:)
Man, those are some ugly legs.
Good idea.
"all congress critters fly commercial coach?!? "
I moved out to New Mexico last year, I didn't realize that the stated speed on the highways is 75 MPH. Of course, if you go 75, you will get run off the road by all those doing 90+.
If she pushed this as a presidential candidate, you can color this tossup state red.....
Hey, I live in the mountains. 40 MPH is pushing it on most portions of the Rim of the World Highway.
If you drive 55 instead of, say, 65 mph, it will take you an extra 10 minutes to drive 60 miles. Assuming that your gas milage goes from 20 to 22.5 miles per gallon, you will also have saved 0.3 gallons of gas. At $2.75 a gallon, that gas would be worth 82.5 cents. So, if you save 90 cents by spending and extra 10 minutes on the road, you are saving money at a rate of $4.95 for every hour wasted driving 55. This is slightly less than the minimum wage.
This is what Hillary! thinks your time is worth.
Great. Same old recycled nonsolutions to bring revenue to the government.
