- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...
"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.
And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

That's a nice looking bike. I'll bet it has more power than anyone actually needs.
As for what a biker looks like...well...my picture is on my profile page, and that's what a biker looks like. Or at least that's what this biker looks like.

I Can't Drive, I'm 65
One foot in the grave, and one on the gas - Hey!
Well Im blocking traffic, they cant pass, no!
So I made a quick illegal turn and I left that doggone blinker on again
You know I got my license back in 45
Most of my friends are barely alive
I take these pills just to survive
I cant drive, Im 65!
So Im tooling right along in my huffmobile
And I cant see over the steering wheel, no
I take a stop sign out and a mailbox too
At the rail road crossing I drive right through
They say Whoa!
I dont go faster than 25
Card in my wallet says you shouldnt revive
Flunked my eyetest I have them a bribe I cant drive, Im 65!

That's the first thing I thought of. Jimmy Carter sitting around the Oval Office in a brown cardigan sweater telling the nation to conserve.
Next up for Hillary....mandatory recycling.

Let them hitchhike on military flights (already scheduled ones). Some of them could use a 'military appreciation' course, anyway...

Hillary: "We're going to take things away from you"
by Beth Fouhy, Associated Press
June 29, 2004
Headlining an appearance with other Democratic women senators on behalf of Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is up for re-election this year, Hillary Clinton told several hundred supporters -- some of whom had ponied up as much as $10,000 to attend -- to expect to lose some of the tax cuts passed by President Bush if Democrats win the White House and control of Congress.
"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you," Sen. Clinton said.
"We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you.
We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."

Hillary is such a she-queen! If she has her way, going through New Mexico again will take me forever and a day (and I would be doing 65).
I hope she really makes this part of her campaign; she'll lose sooooooooooo bad in 2008!

Great idea Hil! Remember how gas prices plummeted when we tried this before? No, wait...they didn't.
Remember, then, the millions of lives that were saved by the reduction in highway speed? No, wait...people continued to die in car crashes.
Okay, then, remember how car insurance rates dropped? Oops, no...they continued to rise.
Umm...what is your reasoning for this again, Hil?

One of my earliest memories is driving with my Grandfather in his car, one that would sound a loud buzzer when he went over 55 MPH.
My M3 has a programmable setting where I can tell it to beep at me when I pass a certain speed. I've found that setting it to 85 is reasonable as I really do want to know if I go above that speed - usually only when passing and for short periods of time.

Publish this far and wide, and Hillary! in 2008 is DOOMED!!!!!!!!!

STFU - I'll pay higher prices and still go 75; thank you very much, Big Sister!

Drag may be exponential but an engine is most efficient at it's maximum torque output. My wife owned a '91 4runner that got ~21mpg @ 70mph as opposed to ~19mpg @ 55mph. The net torque on that engine occurred at 2800rpms(70mph). I believe that to be true on most vehicles as most vehicles have overdrive.

Yup. Bring back 55. And engine governors. And ban cars that don't get more than 50mpg.
The Carter years were glorious.

Wasn't the 55 limit passed during the Nixon years? Passed but not fully implemented. I remember heading out to drive in the 75 mph zone with my learner's permit in the late 70's.
