CHICAGO, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by the Rainbow Sash Movement (RSM). The RSM will respond to the fear and intolerance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) persons, by many of our Catholic Bishops on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2006. We will be entering, with our straight allies, Catholic Cathedrals across the nation on Pentecost wearing Rainbow Sashes as a sign of identification. Some Bishops have welcomed us in the past, and we are thankful for their welcome.
Nationally our Bishops have lobbied against our human rights. Our grief is intensified because many in the GLBT Catholic Community feel alienated from the Church because of this assault on our human rights. We believe the Bishops have a serious obligation to root out structures and attitudes that discriminate against the homosexual as a person. A small number of courageous Bishops are exerting their leadership in behalf of this effort, and these Bishops will have our full support and prayers.
The Gospels reveal that, while Jesus did not hesitate to proclaim radical ethic of life grounded in the promise of God's kingdom, he never ceased to reach out to the lowly, to the outcasts of his time even if they did not live up to the full demands of his teaching. Jesus offered forgiveness and healing to all who sought it. And when some objected to this compassion, he responded: "Let the one among you who is guiltless be the first to throw the stone,"(John 8:7)
We are followers of Jesus Christ, and Catholic. This is why members of the Rainbow Sash Movement will wear Rainbow Sashes on Pentecost Sunday. We see homophobia within the Church as both an opportunity for education, and a way to promote the idea of love of neighbor. We are calling for dialogue.

List. Bad news.
It's a Gramscian trick: make the normal seem abnormal ... put the right-thinking on the defensive. Force sane people to justify their sanity. Don't raise the bridge, lower the river.
Sister Columbiettes response!
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not the forum in which to 'exercise' human rights. It is the time to worship God. Does that address your confusion?
Nothing like trying to use a holy day of the Church for their political statement.
I think we need the Swiss Guard to keep these jerks out. If they're not available, how about the K of C? :-)
you have neglected to factor in the watered down, liberalized catechesis, dished out by some of these bishops over the past 40 years. In my RC diocese alone, 'acceptance' is the norm. It has been carefully doled out to several generations of catholics. In 20 years, they will be taking over.
Well said. Just one change.
That's what I don't understand about these people. Either you believe in the tenets of your church or you don't. The church is under no obligation to change for you. Find a church that will accept you and your behavior. Or better yet, start a new church so that you can do whatever you want and leave everyone else alone.
What was that that Jesus said to Mary Magdalene about not sinning anymore?
Right from Bishop Mahoney's Web site

You are right. After he made that statement, he said "Go and sin no more."
I think you should investigate an Independent Christian Church. I hope you can find where you live a church community like the one I am now a happy member. The Church is led by our elders, members of the congregation, not a hierarchy separated from the church. I see them every week (well, most weeks) and not just on Sundays. They are of us, not above us. They are guided by the The Bible and prayer. The preaching minister is important to decision making, but at the end of the day, he is just a hired hand. We don't have un-Christian policies shoved upon us.
There are some prices to pay. I lost a centuries old tradition by leaving the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Our music, while nice, just isn't the traditional hymns I was brought up on. I particularly miss the feel of the pipe organ on Christmas Eve as the organist pulls out all the stops for the final verse of "Joy to the World". All that is little enough to give up for the Christian community I live in. Please think and pray about it.
I agree.
"Then Jesus stood up again and said to her, "Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condem you?"
"No Lord," she said.
And Jesus said, "Neither do I. Go and sin no more."
John 8:10-11
I agree...it's not enough to be a "follower" of Jesus. He has to be Lord of your life. Which means, in your behavior, you seek His will first and not your own.
How conveeeenient they leave out the part where Christ says, "Go and sin no more."
And just like I'm a *real* vegetarian!
BTW, observe the small children at the front of the group. It reminds me of the Muslim insurgents who use children as shield.

"Some Bishops have welcomed us in the past, .."
I'd like to know who those bishops are.
