There is no comparison to the USSR and people should be sophisticated enough to see the differences. Even if Russia is a second rate two bit tyranny this is nothing compared to the worldwide empire Iron Curtain USSR that controlled half the world and was ready for WWIII with us at the drop of a hat.

Too bad our elected don't follow this reasoning. Thank you again Ronald Reagan.

Petrou makes some interesting oft repeated points...but then again he makes misstatements and glosses over the negative influences of "Western" NGO's and places too much importance on the Council on Foreign Relations positions etc.

AS for the increasing "centralized authority" - compared to the lawless vacuum that came before and the "criminal oligarchs" who pillaged resources for their own gain - more authority is needed.

Comparing nations France is far more centralized than Russia is. Petrou should focus his interest on EU nations that are probably more corrupted and centralized than Russia these days.

When USSR was starting out in the early 20s, it was not a worldwide empire, but, using your own words, "a second rate two bit tyranny". Serious worldwide reach came later.

Dudes Russia just isnt the threat the USSR was and it will be very hard pressed to reach such a level again. That's just reality. I didn't downplay the seriousness of Russia but there is no comparison. Anyone have an idea how Russia is going to take over Eastern Europe again, much less the former Soviet states?

Early 20s USSR did not seem like much a threat either. I was born and grew up there, before getting the ef out, so I claim some direct experience - and let me just say that I cannot take this opinion of yours seriously. The problem is not with the level of the threat [these levels vary with time] but with the threat nature - i.e. with civilizational nature of what Huntington calls "Orthodox civ". Even a small amount of plague bacilli could start an epidemics - the threat is not so much in the scale of outbreak [albeit a small one is easier to treat and contain] as in the virulence of yersinia pestis.

What the hell are you talking about? I admit I'm grouchy today so forgive me. Sweden could become a world power again too, Italy had an empire, Brittania ruled the waves. But Russia today simply is not the strategic threat it was as an International empire monolith that controlled half of Europe, funded Cuba and Vietnam, meddled in the Middle east and armed the Arabs, had plans to attack Western Europe with nukes, backed communist aggression in Africa, was the leader of international communism. The list is endless.

Keep an eye on Russia, but pretending it is like the USSR again is just that, pretending.

"The entire Soviet economy was dependent on the slave labor of peasants and political dissidents in the gulags."

Yeah that was a brilliant communistic move to kill off 20 million of the best and brightest minds in the gulag wasn't it (SARCASM ON)? Now because of communism they feel the only way out of their population decline is to go back to it. As other posters have said and the Georgians themselves, only Democracy provides a total solution. Too bad we'll see WWIII before the old, stupid communist guard dies off...

"Oh guys. I won't now accuse the States of financing them - it's obvious 4 us but u'll never accept it. I'll say only one thing. Imagine that in UR country there would be so-called NGOs financed by the goverments of the other countries which would be telling u that their aim is to destroy ur state and ur country. As well as this they would be breaking the law. Being accused of their crimes they'd tell u that u r stifling democracy and freedom. Wouldn't it b a little bit irritating? However, everything I mentioned was taking place in Russia till recently. Think about it b4 believing everything told u about Russia by media."

Welcome to Freerepublic komrad Yuri. Your country is only twenty or thirty years away from being truly happy. The USA doesnt want to rule there, we only want to see a country that doesn't have leaders who's goals are to enslave the rest of the world. All countries are guilty of some sort of "influence" on lesser nations. We tried to engage Russia fully in the 1990's and in 2001. We trusted Russia and opened up and now we are getting the finger from Putin. Have a good komrad Yuri, me and a lot of other investors wished we could have formed a true economic alliance with the great Russian Bear but instead, Russia will get a few glorious moments in the sun as ruler of this globe, but then be destroyed, hence the 20-30 years till true freedom over there.
