Or, perhaps, one could argue that communism was but one aspect of Russian drive for Imperial domination going back centuries before Marx.
I see no reason why they would stop being Russians (that is fierce, imperialistic bastards) just because the intelligentsia realized that Marxisam-Leninism was *NOT* the best way to achieve world domination.
As I've said before, Putin is just as convinced as President Bush that he should be the leader of the world's sole superpower...
