May 22, 2006 Personal data on about 26.5 million U.S. military veterans was stolen from the residence of a Department of Veterans Affairs data analyst who improperly took the material home, Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson said Monday.
The data included names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth for the veterans, Nicholson said, but "there is no indication at this time" that the data had been used for identify theft.
Nicholson said the theft of the data took place this month, but declined to identify the employee or the location of the burglary.

"That guy probably sold it to China. They should check his bank accounts."
That's what I was thinking. Hard to believe he would take this kind of risk for nothing. If he felt lonely those days are over. I'm sure he'll be investigated and watched for awhile.
He will probably not even get fired. If I was some inner city kid getting hard time for nickel and dime crap, it would make me pissed that this is likely to go unpunished.
I am going out to a buy a house next week-end. I hope now. If my credit score hasn't dropped 200 points this month.
I'd be ruined as well if I hadn't already managed to destroy my credit record all by myself.
Grim. Even if the perps didn't go after this info, now they know what they have and will sell it to the highest bidder. Only hope the FBI is (covertly) the highest bidder.
Did you hear about this ping?
It is being recommended that all vets call in and report this every 90 days for at least two years.
Book mark for future check
That's exactly what this pryck did.
In addition to the identity theft angle, might we consider that someone wants to know who among us is ex-military and where we reside?
I know someone who is in the position to find out much more about this incident. His take? Its just a bonehead move by some upper level IT guy. This person probably knows the guy who did it, put it that way. No one in the VA, other than those close to the situation, knows who did this yet, but word should spread around the IT departments at the VA. Maybe I'll get a freeper exclusive. "SCOOP! VA data leaker, INDICTED!"
And will that employee that improperly took the data home get fired and a court martial. Probably not, because some willy, nilly judge will get the case, let the person off, and just say, oh, but I can't find the others. So what ever can I do, but drop the case...
It was not stolen it was sold and the robbery faked.
I am so broke for the last 5 years, with all the unemployment I went through, my credit score is almost non-existant!!
I pity the fool who tries to steal my I.D. , he might start getting calls from creditors!
..better him than me, got one that I wish would just let me mail in the checks and leave me alone"!
thanks for the heads ...... up / down
Now someone has a list of all the people in the USA trained in the use of firearms.
A furious BTTT!

That's what **I'D** like to know-- in addition to firing and prosecuting his @ss.
What are the odds this guy is a Dimocrat?
> The Department of Veterans Affairs soon will ask veterans to volunteer their DNA for a genetic database
Subject to the same airtight security, no doubt... /sarc
