Liberal? Get over it
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 5/20/06 | Matthew Melone

There's good news for the young and hopelessly naive and liberal: You'll get over it.

It's common knowledge that young people become more conservative as they age. Generation X followed this trend, and indicators suggest Generation Y will be no different.

I understand what life is like on a typical college campus and have gripped with the misplaced mental energies of youth. I can empathize with the temptations of liberal cynicism, the appeal of academic elitism and an almost embarrassingly idealistic view of world affairs.

But I fought the urges, and so can you.

For all the graduates of 2007, soon you will begin being mugged by reality. As you grow more distant from the ivory towers and struggle to root yourself in the middle class, your liberal tendencies will become but a memory.

Perhaps you'll look back on these days and laugh.

Maybe you'll even wise up and realize that if you weren't so scared of the military, you could have signed up for the armed forces and done something worthwhile.

But in the meantime, to avoid embarrassment down the road, it may be prudent to stay quiet until your liberal urges pass.

For example, I've noticed a handful of columns in student newspapers and in "New Voices" that advocate the U.S. pursue unilateral disarmament in order to defuse tensions with Iran.

I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy, but this is a joke I've heard one too many times. If you're liberal and feel like shooting your mouth off about unilateral disarmament, I beg you to reconsider. A potential employer could Google your name, read that column, find out what a bonehead you are and not hire you.

If you don't realize how stupid unilateral disarmament is, don't worry. Just wait a few.....

"I remember thinking as a junior in High School that John Dean should have been hung for his part in bringing down Nixon. . . "

They were at Watergate getting Mo Dean's not so lovely information that had to be destroyed to protect John. Then John turned on the President to protect his wife. Jerk.

Wonder if they're still married or if she's back doing the "job" she had before they were married.

Good point. I suggest that either Freepers or the RNC should publish , say a list of 50 reasons that people who vote liberal are losing their minds. I know Rush and Sean have such lists. The RNC should take this up and perhaps avoid the coming Nov. disaster allowing the Rats to take over Congress.

My dad has a wise saying: The bigger the F*ckup, the bigger the chance that that someone is a liberal...

This is absolutely 100% correct. The three most utterly worthless f*ckups I know are all raging neo-Stalinists. Without exception, every time they f*ck something up (which is everything they touch, every time they touch it) their immediate knee-jerk response is "somebody needs to do this for me".

Any type of work with any one of them involves completely carrying them while listening to hours and hours of self-righteous indignation, whining and complaining. These are people who are so inept they evidently cannot bathe themselves. I honestly believe all of them work to come up with new and interesting ways to be unpleasant above and beyond stinking up the place, acting stupid and talking like some retard.

When you're 20 years old, if you aren't a liberal, you don't have a heart.

When you're 30 years old, if you aren't a conservative, you don't have a brain.

I never had long hair, but playing in a band all through college kept me liberal.

Being a musician myself, that reminds me of a conversation I had with a fellow musician and (former) friend. He said, "You'd be a lot more liberal if you didn't have such a good job." My reply was, "You wouldn't be so liberal if you had a job."

I used to be a big time Deadhead growing up.

I've been told that I was in attendance at two Grateful Dead Concerts.

Cordially,

Voted for LBJ.

Less than a year into his presidency, I became a Republican and couldn't wait for the next election to cast him out. Was democrat until LBJ, Republican ever since. I still can't forgive myself for all the liberal progaams which I helped to bring about by voting for the wrong person. Never again!

I was born a conservative, I was raised a conservative, I went to college as a conservative, and I expect I will die a conservative.

Me, too. I also had long hair, but I was a girl, so not quite as shocking.

Not all of us are liberals. Some of us youngstaz were born conservatives, hehehe.

Ah, I love it!! One of the wise ones with a solid core, unmoved by the brainwashing all around us. I have increasing respect for individuals such as yourself. I didn't take that path and since I know God has a plan for each of us, I would have made little changes (just wish I could have erased 90% of my actions and would have shut the ole' liberal trap once in awhile-I blush in rememberance! :) )

I remember being in front of the TV when I was young cheering on Reagan. I think the media, planned parenthood, college brain washing and most critically the lack of reinforced values at home turned me rabidly against my conservative roots. Thank God, I have awakened and have come home.

I was easily tossed by the winds and a real people pleaser-both of which made me vunerable to being a tool. I love the adage: if you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything.

No, actually he and I had a rather good-natured friendship as far as political discussions were concerned. He kind of went off the deep end. Last I heard of him, I went off over e-mail because he went back on his word. He was putting a show together at a local club and told me that he wanted my band to play, then turned around and told me that he'd already filled the slot a week after I said we'd do it. Never heard from him after that, even though I relayed through mutual friends that all I needed was an apology and all would be forgiven.

Copied and emailed to Doomonyou Jr., graduating from High Screwel this year. He can hand it out to most of his pinhead (liberal) classmates.

I've pretty much given up on the party. However, there are plenty of individual Republicans running who are conservative.

I support them directly and don't worry about groups.

Maybe its the realist in me, but even if I found a group that I supported completely, I doubt they could get elected. Republicans can get elected, but unless they are conservative, they are as bad as Dems - that's why I look for individuals. If they have an (R), they'll get the party money. I'm hoping that, by targetting my influence to the individual, I can make a bigger impression towards moving the party towards conservatism.

Time will tell if my strategy pays off, but I can't help thinking that, if every conservative Republican bypassed the party structure and supported conservative Republican candidates directly (either with money or time), then the party would quickly get the message.

I stayed up that night and cried with my father that night, when Nixon won

I'd like to get a good look at the 1968 Democratic platform to see if it's any more liberal than the policies we've been getting from the GOP for the last few years. Bet it ain't.

That is hilarious. It also sounds like a few guys and gals I knew back in my college days.
