Check out this Vent VIDEO.

Bureaucratic IDIOCY has made the air marshal's stick out like a sore thumb. Yoo-Hoo! You want the air marshals to BLEND IN with the passengers which means wearing slob clothing like the rest of us.

A dress code is okay for an office but, come on, not when you are working undercover.

What they should do is eliminate the dress code, but continue to let the public think that they have not.

Remember that scene in "Serpico" where the undercover cops stuck out like sore thumbs because they wore what they thought was informal civilian dress? The only one effectively undercover was Serpico who looked like a scruffy hippie.

I think it would be a HOOT if they ALL actually dressed as MEN IN BLACK for a 2 week period just to press their point. Dark glasses and all!!!

They should eliminate the air marshals and give guns to the pilots. The only reason the air marshals need to blend in is because they can't be on every flight. The pilots though have a better attendance record.

This is dumb. Unfortunately that seems to be par for the course with the government.

I have fun with this when I fly, actually.

Let's just say I fit the physical profile.

6'4"
235 lbs.
Fit.
high and tight
middle aged white guy.

I also mimic the dress code not to mimic it, but because that's how I dress when I travel for business. I wear a sport coat cuz it holds my ticket jacket/boarding pass, my passport, my PDA, and my pen, etc.

I carry an innocuous looking soft-sided bag/back-pack for my laptop and all the associated crap of business travel.

Because I am a multi-million miler biz flyer, I am first class or exit row-aisle flyer, and if not, I am always on the aisle.

But ...

Just to mess with people, I DO make very direct eye contact with people as I walk down the aisle, or as they do if I am seated. Also I keep my sportcoat on for the whole flight. (they're lightweight and comfy).

One flight on a 777 I was exit row left side (right by the boarding door) first row in coach. I put my bag in the overhead and took my seat. Later a young couple (early 20s) boarded to take their seats in the row directly behind me. In putting their stuff in the overhead, the pushed my bag behind theirs. No big deal, but I wanted to be able to get my laptop out once we took off "and reached a comfortable cruise above 10,000 feet". So I stood up and re-arranged the stuff so my bag was in front. The young man asked me why I was moving their stuff. I responded ... "Because I *HAVE* to have access to my bag during the flight. HAVE to."

You shoulda seen his eyes. It was funny.

Air Marshals are nice because they can legally cuff an a$$hole passenger. Otherwise the passengers have to employ greater physical force to the perp in order to subdue him/them. The idea that perps will go after FAMs first just means they would play their hand to the passengers who would react anyway. There is NO chance US passengers will EVER allow some nutcase to enter the cockpit. None. IT ain't happening again.

There was a thread here last week describing all th eBS pilots have to go through in order to carry aboard. Thanks to the FAA and TSA. It's nuts.

Why don't you check your luggage and put your laptop under the seat?

They should eliminate the air marshals and give guns to the pilots.

That way the pilots have to leave the relative safety of the cockpit in the event of a disturbance, which could result in the bad guys taking control of the airplane. While the pilots should be armed to defend the cockpit, the job of securing the cabin is for the air marshals.

They aren't called "shiny black cop shoes" for nothing...

These guys (and gals?) should never be obvious to the rest of the passengers. Sheesh!

Two problems: 1) the air marshals are very often not on board, and 2) air marshals spend their whole lives waiting for something to happen to justify their existence. They eventually feel the urge to shoot a passenger to earn their paycheck, as has happened. The pilots do not have this unfulfilled desire to justify themselves.

um ...

I do check my "luggage" when it makes sense.

Airlines invite you to put SMALLER items and jackets in the overheads and heavier items under the seat in front of you.

When you are bulkhead row, there is no seat in front of you -- one has to put one's gear in the overhead.

Sometimes I do put my roll-aboard in the overhead and my laptop bag under the seat. Depends on the flight.

Trust me, I travel light.

On the surprisingly-entertaining A&E reality show "Airline," a man was actually arrested because he (a) was wearing an NYPD t-shirt, (b) was feigning vigilant behavior on the plane, and (b) insisted to other passengers that he had to have access to the aisle so he could see what was going on.

As I recall, he was charged with "impersonating an LEO."

Please don't end up like that guy.

No worries. I know the difference. I don't really try to cross the thin blue line, and I have never claimed otherwise. Still it's fun.

BLEND IN with the passengers which means wearing slob clothing like the rest of us

The real problem is that too many people actually dress like slobs. Not too sound naive, but on my last plane trip I saw far too many people dressed in shorts, sandals, ill-fitting T-shirts, baseball caps worn constantly, colors that went poorly together. A disturbing number of the men were also unshaven. One dirty hippie kept his feet propped up on the bulkhead for the entire duration of the flight. Unfortunately, with current trends in clothing, we've passed the line from dressing for comfort to dressing like little kids who don't have any sense.

What is reassuring is that if anyone yelled "Terrorist! Let's get him!", I feel confident that everyone would respond aggressively to neutralize the threat. Despite a blase attitude on the part of many toward the current war, no one will ever again let the plane be taken over. We just wouldn't have any neckties or belts with which to secure the terrorists.

"The only reason the air marshals need to blend in is because they can't be on every flight"

wrong.

If there were bad guys on the flight, wanna guess who they would pick to be the first victim? Mmhmm...the AM. Take out the resistance first.
