Bush's Base Betrayal
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, May 21, 2006 | Richard A. Viguerie

Posted on 05/20/2006 5:11:47 PM PDT by gwb43_2004

As a candidate in 2000, George W. Bush was a Rorschach test. Country Club Republicans saw him as another George H.W. Bush; some conservatives, thinking wishfully, saw him as another Ronald Reagan. He called himself a "compassionate conservative," which meant whatever one wanted it to mean. Experts from across the party's spectrum were flown to Austin to brief Bush and reported back: "He's one of us."

Republicans were desperate to retake the White House, conservatives were desperate to get the Clinton liberals out and there was no direct heir to Reagan running for president. So most conservatives supported Bush as the strongest candidate -- some enthusiastically and some, like me, reluctantly. After the disastrous presidency of his father, our support for the son was a triumph of hope over experience.

The reason Rockefeller got the nod was he passed the short arm test Ford used for all his appointees.

And, to prove the soundness of that judgment, old Rocky "died in the saddle".

Deserves a repeat- so thoughtful, intelligent conservative voters will have twice as much pleasure from this thread...

"He not only has my support, he has my undying gratitude for his leadership and service to the nation. I think he will probably be the best president of my lifetime, and that goes back a fair piece. The only two to rival him for the quality of the man and the presidency IMO are RR and Ike. Ike had much less understanding and respect for economics, particularly tax policy, than GWB, and Ike promised to cut taxes from the high rates of WWII and then renegged. I loved RR and he was a great president. He still had to deal with the Soviets and the nuke standoff, but he didn't have to fight hot wars as W has. No need for further comparison. W has represented my agenda very well, and I shudder to think of where we would be without him (and with Gore/Kerry and their ilk in charge). It's time for Republicans to stop running for the tall grass, and to stand tall with our president. "

In the modern era, the worst thing you can do is hurt someone's feelings. So screaming goes out the window.

Unless you are screaming at a conservative - then hurting their feelings is ok and to be encouraged. :-)

Man, I can still remember the Belmore Cafeteria and the Seventh Ave Flyers.

Now seventh ave is huge, giant money.

..If you get a chance, watch the movie Zoolander, Jerry Stiller does a dead on impersonation of a seventh ave guy...

Because for better or worst he is the leader of the party. So it is his responsibility to unite the party not divide it.

Visit Farmer's Market in West L.A. It may have changed, though - I haven't been there in 20 years.

Does anyone in America know Bush's strategy for Iraq anymore? When are we getting out of that hellhole?

This guy is such a clown.

Actually, people still yell at each other up at Hunt's Point (NY's vegetable and fruit market). They yell in Yiddish, Italian, Korean, Chinese and Arabic.

They should make the place into a museum before even that fades.

W has represented my agenda very well....

Was a "new America" part of your agenda?

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on.
