Dan Rather Fired By CBS (Read Details - That's The Bottom Line)
MB26

Posted on 05/20/2006 4:28:15 PM PDT by MindBender26

This just in from source at Black Rock:

He/She is at pre-season party in The Hamptons. Other CBSers (The Suits) are there as well.

The Suits confirmed:

Ran Rather's contract at CBS expires in August. He has not been offered ANY type of renewal. There may be some tiny dollar (the exact fee never to be disclosed) face-saving deal but that's it, Dan is out.

This comes after he "resigned" from CBS Evening News position last year in an attempt to stop the bloodletting of advertisers at CBS. As we all know, the primary cause was not so much Rather's broadcasting the original phony Bush "Recordsgate" story but Rather's insistence, way beyond anything or any time that was reasonable, that the story was valid.

From the moment FR's pajamahadeen pointed out the many irrefutable technical flaws in the supposed documents, it was dead meat as a journalistic piece. Rather slew himself by sticking with what was obviously a phony story designed to attack the President and help Kerry.

In addition, Rather's acceptance of a $20,000 fee to speak to Texas Democrats was another quiet nail in his CBS coffin. In journalism circles, that is a huge no-no. Some stations forbid their employees to even contribute to campaigns and fire offenders In this case, Rather was taking $ from the Texas Dems!

After Evening News, Rather was to contribute to "60 Minutes II" on Wednesdays but that show had ratings lower than the radio calls of the Roto-Rooter truck dispatcher.

How significant is this? 25 years after he left the anchor chair, Walter Cronkite is still on some income at CBS.

Rather is out on his ear.

There will be much more on this in MSM (including some severe spinning) in weeks to come, but FR had it first!

I sure do hope this isn't a signal for Fox News to add him to the roster!

I don't know...with Murdoch openly courting Hitlery and O'Reilly saying time and time again "we need National ID cards", it would not surprise me one bit if Dan Blather goes to Fox News...maybe they would have him either co-host with Brit Hume or take over Brit Hume's spot.

My favourite Dan story is when he flew in to San Francisco immediately after the Lioma Prieta earthquake in 1989. A double decked freeway in Oakland, named Nimitz, collapsed crushing a dozen or more cars with their occupants inside, including the brother of someone I knew at the time. Danny boy positions himself in front of the pancaked freeway for the Evening News (there are still people alive there at the time and the rescue efforts continue), all decked out in military camouflage. Next day an item appears in Herb Caen's gossipy column in the Chronicle, reported to him by one of his readers who were the source of just about everything in his columns, saying that inches off camera and a few short step from where Danny boy in his pancake makeup and Soldier of Fortune duds stood, was Danny's black limo with a tray of fruit, champaign and various delicacies clearly in sight.

I didn't know there was a theory about you "knowing".
I told my wife that the documents were fake before CBS actually did the story and put them on the web. I Suspected them to be fake the moment I heard about how they had shown up so many years later from a dead guy implicating himself in cover-up. It just had all the earmarks of a convenient forgery. I give you and all the guys on the web that night a big congratulation for exposing this crap.

There were many, many indicators of forgery, including those you mention. Someone at the time had a running list of them. Not all of them panned out, but it was over 50, and it was completely overwhelming.

Anybody could tell they were fakes.

You should write a book about your heroics back in 2004.

Was it Dan Rather that said "The voters had a tantrum." after the 1990's Republican takeover of the Congress?

I think that was the Canadian, Jennings.

"I have been interested in computers since 1979. I have used dot matrix, mainframe line printers, daisy wheel, ink jet, & laser printers. I have worked in an office environment from 1980 forward, except for 3 years of law school from 1982-1985. I have typed thousands of pages on IBM Selectrics, and a few hundred on various mechanical and electric typewriters of the conventional variety. I have changed the type ball and pitch on Selectrics many, many times. I have changed the daisy wheel on daisy wheel printers. I have typed at least a thousand pages on a Wang word processing system, and had typed for me many thousands more. I was one of two people in our small firm that spearheaded the purchase and installation of a Apple Macintosh computer network in 1989. I was the office computer geek for 8 years. I read the manual for Microsoft Word 4 for the Macintosh."

I have also spent most of my work life creating documents---though with less of a "feel" for the nitty-gritty mechanical side then this writer. I think all these details are super cool, thanks for posting.

The forgeries overshadowed what was actually the first big, idiotic mistake about the story - - the STORY itself! CBS attempted to help fix the election for Kerry - - by phonying up a story that Bush once failed to take a physical for his National Guard unit back in 1973. (??? Who thought this would be an election-tipping revelation, anyway?)

America yawned until it turned out that CBS went and tried to back up its pathetic cheapshot with a very cheaply forged memo. Then, not content to have merely blown off one foot, CBS took a howitzer to the other foot by "sticking to its story", even after the rest of the world could clearly see that the memo was created with a modern Microsoft Word program.

Dan Rather and the brass at CBS made the Keystone Cops look like the Manhattan Project. About the only thing CBS did right at the time was find a couple of toadies who were corrupt enough to publish a laugher of a whitewash wherein they claimed that political bias had nothing to do with CBS's shoddy journalism and that it could not be determined with certainty that the forged memos were forged.

It's not only Dan Rather that needs to go - - it's CBS News in its entirety that needs to be buried.
