The UN and The Unit
Self ^ | 5/20/2006 | Dick Bachert

Posted on 05/20/2006 8:03:10 AM PDT by Dick Bachert

I’m pretty selective about what I watch on the tube these days. At my age – 65 – one learns to apportion one’s diminishing allotment of time on the planet veeerrry carefully. These days it’s mostly wife, children, grandkids (aren’t they great?), a few friends and this computer.

Of the new shows this season, one of my favorites is “The Unit.” Created by David Mamet -- “The Untouchables” (the Kevin Costner film) and Shawn Ryan --“The Shield” (with which I have a number of problems related to the X-rated dialog), it portrays the activities of a Delta Force team as they go about doing some of this country’s heavy lifting.

The May 16th episode had the boys in Croatia to capture a suspected war criminal. He was to be turned over to a United Nations team for trial for genocide by an international court. That the “war criminal” had offed several muslim villages is the topic of another rant. But I think we all agree that one ought not make war on non-combatant men, women and children.

The Unit’s clever plan to capture this fellow was figuratively and literally blown apart by the grand-standing, publicity hound of a French colonel commanding the UN force, getting one of the Unit’s men wounded and the subject’s hapless wife and others on both sides needlessly killed.

As riveting as it was, it wasn’t so much the on-screen action that caught my attention. It was the rapid-fire dozen or so highly disparaging remarks by members of the Unit – about the United Nations and its abject ineffectiveness. (And the French got a rather thorough – and well-deserved -- working over as well.

At one point I scared my wife when I began hooting and pumping my fist in the air. (Note to self: Self – exercise more control.)

That dialog was co-written by Lynn Mamet, sister of co-creator David.

Friends, when we have high-level folks in Hollywood writing lines trashing the UN it is a very good thing for those of us who have long been advocates of getting the U.S. OUT of the UN and the UN OUT of the U.S.!

A small thing? Perhaps.

But when what had once been considered the stuff of conspiracy nut cases begins to creep into popular culture from, of all places, the generally utopian socialist denizens of Hollywood, there is something big in the wind.

BTW, the men of the Unit cleaned up the mess made by the botched UN operation, captured the bad guy and turned him over to the French colonel – who promptly lost control of his captive and was killed by him. The bad guy wound up full of holes on the floor of the O Club at the Unit’s home base when the bad guy and a few of his pals made a failed attempt at revenge on the members of the Unit.

Who said there are no more happy endings?

I’d urge all who read this to learn all they can on the origins, history and activities of one of the most corrupt and dangerous organizations on the face of the earth – the United Nations.

If enough of us get up to speed on the issue and get busy, perhaps that “something in the wind” will be the backs of the corrupt “leaders” of the UN as they sail away from our shores, taking their bankrupt one-world utopian socialist philosophy with them.

I just hope they leave the silverware but I’m not holding my breath.

Not according to the "Nuke Mecca" crowd. according to them the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim.

Wow. I watched the first episode of the Unit and it was okay, didn't really catch my attention at that time. But that episode sounds really good. What night and time does it air?

"What night and time does it air?"

This got my attention, too. Anyone know the answer to the above question?

I quite agree with your remarks about the UN and the Frogs. I almost fell out of my chair when the anti UN and anti French comments were made. I thought to myself, "well, if this keeps up, this show will bite the dust soon".

I've enjoyed the show and wish it was not opposite "House" which I also enjoy.

It aired on Tuesday nights at 9 pm. I think that 5/16 show was the season wrap-up. Check your local listings to be sure.

Ditto the comment re. House. I love this guy as he's one of the few characters on the tube who -- according to my wife -- makes me seem rather normal. (An observation with which ohioWfan and a quite a few others here would strenuously disagree.)

We have to tape one of those shows so we can watch them both.

Thinking TIVO but -- aside from those two, CSI LV and NCIS, don't watch all that much to justify the 13 bucks a month.

Like House, I, too, am cheap. Just ask my bride.

While I was as excited about this new series and was glued to the set on a weekly basis, I have found my interest waning as the weeks go by. What really started it for me was the bashing done against Christians in the episode where some missionaries were taken hostage and the Unit had to go get them.

Also, the "realism" of the plots is already wearing pretty thin and getting pretty repetitive - kind of like the same thing that happened to the Alias series. The Unit is turning into a high tech gunslinging soap opera and has lost its place in my home.

The Delta Force ATTACKING the United Nations in New York or Brussels.. would be a HIT.. Few deserve it more.. than the United Nations..

I must agree with you whole heartedly. The UN has become a tool for the corrupt. Do we have to look far to confirm this, NO.
Rwanda,Darfur, Iraq, Iran and on and on and on. Your right. Perhaps we should get out of the UN and the UN out of America.

Yep, had problems with that show as well.

But I THINK the point Mamet was trying to make -- as well as anyone with the quasi-Hollywood world-view could -- was that the men of the Unit were so dedicated that they back in and, at great peril to themselves, rescued these idealistic kids they KNEW would eventually wind up on the business end of a bullet -- or worse -- a machete.

American fighting men are largely wired that way and God bless 'em for that.

There was one spot in that episode where on of the unit members alerts Top that the French are about. He simply says, "riibbitt" (the frog noise)
I laughed myself into a cramp.

NCIS had Gibbs in a coma flashing back to his USMC days. Wasn't paying much attention, but there was a mention of Clinton's weak response (lobbing a couple of cruise missles at a tent) to some event, prehaps the Kobar Towers.

Wrtten and produced by Don Bellasarius (Magnum, JAG). Good conservative. Came to the Hollywood Celebrity Shoot for a number of years.

Yep, saw that NCIS show.

Ballasarius has done some very good work and one of my favorite guys out there.

I recall a number of clearly Christian JAG theme shows on the celebration of Christmas. The charachters actually PRAYED out loud. Bet Don moved to any number of B or C party lists after those.

Guys, "Broke Butt Mountain" and "DiVinci" notwithstanding, I THINK the forces of darkness in Tinsel Town may be losing the battle.

I watched the first episode - so far out of reality as to be a bad joke, didn't finish wasting any time on episode 2.

Charging Charlie must be madder than a wet cat over the show.

Tuesday nights following NCIS -- which, BTW seems to be pro-USA in it's writing, too.... and maintains high ratings even against American Idol.
