University Warns Students of Deer Attacks

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- Tammy Emery used to think of deer as sweet and adorable, like Bambi. An encounter with a hard-charging doe changed that.

The 31-year-old secretary was among at least seven people threatened or injured by female deer last year on Southern Illinois University's campus - attacks that have prompted the school to wage a safety campaign during this spring's fawning season.

The attacks in the woods at the 20,000-student university have been attributed to a combination of protective motherly instinct, squeezed habitat and, in some cases, a little too much human curiosity.

The message now: Keep your eyes peeled for deer, don't approach them, and if a wild-eyed deer starts bounding your way, run.

The university should introduce wolves and mountain lions into the area...that would take care of the deer problem. (For the humor impaired...that's a joke.)

Hah! My dog used to chase deer in just those woods. Never caught any, but had a great time doing so. The problem is that these animals are not learning (and teaching the younguns) that the top animal is man.

Her only exposure to wildlife prior to her being attacked was probably through animated Disney movies.

http://www.wildlife.utah.gov/news/05-03/deer_dogs.html

In PA it's: "It is unlawful for dogs to chase or pursue big game, but hunters may only shoot dogs if they are actually in the act of attacking a big game animal. If you see a dog or dogs chasing any deer, bear, elk or turkey, please contact the Game Commission and report the violation."

When I went there one year the pigeons were really bad and when the students went home for xmas break the campus cops had themselves a little pigeon shoot. Only trouble was that they put the carcasses in the trash cans. The trash cans were emptied when the students left and then not again until they came back. So the students came back and found hundreds of pigeon carcasses in the campus bins. There was no PETA back then, but the hairy-armpits brigades raised holy heck. I thought it was funny.

"squeezed habitat" my eye; too many deer due to a number of factors, not the least of which are the bleeding heart animal rights morons and soft minded liberals who lobby to make hunting a crime.
