Immigration Reform...What Say You Now FReepers?
FR | 5-19-06 | Bob J

Be Careful What You Wish For

So, we get 350 miles of fence...the Dems and Immigration proponents everything else. I knew this was going to turn out bad. By elevating the issue of illegal immigration to a crisis level, immigration reform advocates have handed the dems and the immigration lobby the vehicle by which they will really open the floodgates and naturalize 120 million new potential dem voters over the next 20 years.

Ths was never going to work. The House and Senate simply have too many RINO's to effect the kind of change that reformists dreamed of. Anyone who thought it would was blind. Thanks for the effort, but the strategery wasn't thought all the way through.

By bringing the immigration question to the top of the table, they have handed the dems a bat with which to beat us over the head for the next 20 years. Conservative and pub reformists looking for real progress and change will be characterized in the media as meanspirited racists and bigots while the dems nickel and dime the legislation and take the teeth out of any new law. They will be portrayed as the real champions.

Hope you like the fence...it's all we'll get.

But they were catalyzed by those calling for closing the borders.

Who were catalyzed by the president when he first called for amnesty in January 2001.

Face it, he started this ball rolling.

Good rant...
Amazing that many freepers can't put the dominos togther.. When 20+ million aliens become citizens (or BEFORE) i.e democrats are not beyond voter fraud.. with democrats even the dead vote.. Then the Voting Demographics will change in this country forever.. The aliens will become republicans when Hell freezes over.. I can understand the country generally being flumoxed by this gambit.. BUT ON FREE PREPUBLIC?.. Now thats indicative.. Indicative of liberal thinking...

Its like, some freepers can't see what 20+ million propective voters, democrat voters, will do to the National State and Local elections.. Its like, many freepers are like the Harpocrites on Oprahs Show.. and are blind to the difference between a democrat a RINO and republican.. Follow the leader is Not even good for the lemmings that are programmed to march that way..

Bob J,

My recollection is that border control is an issue started and used by leading Democrats to hammer President Bush as an illustration of how inept he is.

Do you have information you can share that points to your premise that the immigration/border control was an issue brought to the surface primarily by extremist conservatives?

Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code, "Improper Entry by Alien," any citizen of any country other than the United States who:

-Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or

-Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers;
*******
This is only part of the law, But I am trying to get a reason why people break it.
I can think of only 4 reasons.

1) carrying drugs or drug profits.
2) criminals who can't pass a border inspection on their ID.
3) OTM (other than Mexican).
4) people who are too stupid to know that any Mexican with clean ID and baggage can ride a bus to a port of entry and cross into the United States than move freely for several miles.

None of these people will be assets to the United States.
I wonder which of the 4 reasons the open border lobby support?
Or do they have a different reason?

Isn't that the way it has always been and shouldn't that have been predicted?

The House and Senate simply have too many RINO's to effect the kind of change that reformists dreamed of.

The House is holding so far. And the real problem lies with the fact that Bush is allied with Dems and RINOs in the Senate and is now going to try and arm-twist the House pubbies. If Bush had said he would veto an amnesty bill (like he threatened with the Dubai ports deal), I doubt amnesty would be in the Senate bill.

Sometimes I think the most dangerous politician is someone who cannot or will not run again - because you have no threat of not voting for them next election, so they can basically do what they please, their party be damned (Arlen Specter fits this category as well - I doubt he will run again, given his health problems).

With midterms coming up, the House is going to be more concerned about getting legislation passed...any legislation. Good legislation will be a secondary concern.

I think it was just a few years ago when I heard folks talking about not talking about immigration at FR as it was too contentious a topic to wade into.

Boy, do times change? ;-)

You would be surprised, Conn is one of the States hit hardest by the illegal wave, people are unhappy, at least those that I talk to.

"Has the National Guard showed up at the border yet?" Not till June. Until then the Border Patrol will have to clean its own toilets and pick up its own trash.

They haven't shown up yet, but the good news is that at least they've agreed on a uniform for the unarmed "Border National Guard."

Notice all the cool campaign ribbons they can get depending on how many illegal aliens they manage to welcome in and how friendly they are when they greet them.

I suppose the new unarmed Border National Guard can also make sure all the illegal aliens all have shopping carts.

The highest elected official in the land who opposes a physical fence and supports amnesty for illegal aliens is the President of the United States. Why don't you write to him?

"1) Hold your Republican representatives in Congress (both House and Senate) accountable for their actions."

Why not, it's worked so well in the past!

"2) Let them know how angry you are about this issue and convince them that they will loose their next election, if they ignore people like you. They work for you, and not the other way around!"

Why not, it's worked so well in the past!

"3) Refuse to contribute any money to the GOP until this issue has been resolved to your liking."

Why not, it's worked so well in the past!

Who, in your opinion, elevated the immigration issue to crisis level?

Good question. The initial post implies that illegal immigration isn't really a big deal.

I used to wade into those threads. The problem is they were filled with too many bigots whose solution was to shoot illegals on sight.

Some of them are still around.

Technically, immigration propenents with their hundreds of thousands in their rallies across the US. But they were catalyzed by those calling for closing the borders.

Ok...so we should have all been good little boys and girls that stayed content with unrestricted illegal immigration? You're upset that conservatives upset the illegal aliens? What kind of weak-kneed, simpering approach is that? How emasculated have we become?

That can work both ways Bob. Although I am hoping for some rational compromises in the Conference, they may come up with something that nobody can vote for and it will end up like Social security reform......

Tabled.....

What you smokin? "elevating the issue of illegal immigration to a crisis level"? Hello? It's been a crisis for some time. Instead of ignoring it, we are now going to deal with it.

Talk about giving up before the fight has even begun! I think you misread the events, my friend! The House Conference commitee has yet to even receive the Senate's bill, and you are throwing in the towel. Do you think that we could have done more, by doing nothing? Just what logic is your criticism of Free Republic's anti-illegal alien stance based on? "Better not speak up, cuz you might get noticed?" The old Racist canard doesn'twork anymore. Ol'd dingy Harry Reid is an idiot, and even members of his party treat him as one. Next you will be jumping in the foxhole when Howard Dean opens his foolish mouth. Frankly, I can't wait until he does! It will further solidify the Pro-conservatitve, anti-RINO sentiment that is rapidly building in this country. Now is NOT the time to give up, as the old days of swallowing anything and everything the imperial senate hands down are gone. Be of good cheer, and keep on with the fight! Send those emails to your Senators and Congressmen, and get the point across... the Status Quo is DEAD!, BUILD THE FENCE... to begin with... then, greatly expand the ranks of the Border Patrol, enforce employer sanctions, and NO pathway to easy citizenship for illegal aliens from anywhere... and we don't need no steenking guest werker program!
