Forgive me for this post, but I have desperately searched for the link at ABC's website pertaining to tonights Nightline segment of an interview with an ex/current CIA expert. I believe ABC has withdrawn the link because of this interview that cited the Ozark Caligulas Administration as the cause of the current CIA woes. I dont watch too much from the MSM, so I dont even know the ABC host who conducted the interview. Basically, the CIA expert was asked what has happened to the CIA. In addition to citing low morale, he stated that a substantial portion of the current agents are young and inexperienced. The reason stems from the massive cuts the CIA experienced during Caligulas Administration (23,000 missed hiring opportunities). Since it appears ABC is censoring this story, I need help in bringing this link up per FreeRepublic protocol. Thanks for any help -
Interesting.
made me do a double take
Ping of interest - probably the one night you missed Nightline!
I hope someone has information on this.
I don't see it on the website either.
I guess we on the west coast should be able to get it and to record it though. I doubt they would change the whole show for the west coast. I think they are far too lazy to do that.
Too good to be true. Nothing to see hear.
ping
Please call him the Arkansas Caligula. Don't insult the rest of the Ozarks by using that tag! :}
Stansfield Turner ruined the CIA.
are you sure I checked the online tv listing for LA... it list Nightline as a repeat from Original Airdate: March 24, 1980.
Missed it
Not to mention the CHRUCH commission.
LOL, I think we were directed to the wrong show - by me!
If I remember, I'll try and catch in in another hour or so on ABC.
They thought this was current and you think it says 3/1980?
That would be when Reagan just got in with Carter's guys still in place.
This is geting odd to me. I would think the picture would suggest an old film. I think the online description must be wrong.
bttt
That would be when Reagan just got in with Carter's guys still in place."
Reagan didn't get in for 10 more months - January 1981.
Thanks, that is right, I was thinking he came in the January after the election, but I missed the year by one.
Tonight I caught the tail end of a TV interview (don't ask me where, I don't remember) in which the CIA speaker pointed out that 40 years ago a significant % of students in high school studied foreign languages. He said recently it has dropped a lot to 8%. His question, "Where am I supposed to get the language knowledgeable recruits to use in the field with such a small output of foreign language speakers?" This is not a precise quote, but it captures the essence of his problem.
This is probably why we have had to depend so heavily on secondary sources and long distance sources of information, rather that "feet on the ground". It helps explain some of our very dangerous intelligence failures. We really need to start pushing language training opportunites, especially in important and difficult languages like Arabic and Chinese. To be really effective such training will have to start in elementary or at the very least middle schools.
