Immigration: At The Tipping Point

Political commentators -- both right and left -- who think the outrage over the immigration crisis is a conservative fringe phenomenon are sorely out of touch. That may have been true some time ago, but the sleeping giant of American goodwill and apathy has finally been jolted out of her sleep.

It's hard to deny that the catalyzing events were the audacious protests of illegals throughout the country, waving Mexican flags, disrespecting the American flag and demanding, sometimes in Spanish, their "civil rights." Perhaps Sen. Ted Kennedy's pathetic pandering to this burgeoning new constituency contributed to the national wake-up call as well.

I recognize that certain eastern-corridor economic conservatives may have lofty motives in their undying advocacy for open borders. They continue to romanticize immigration as some innocuous boon to our economy with comparatively minor downsides. But they grossly underestimate the magnitude of the angst of mainstream conservatives over this issue and misjudge their motives. They betray their elitism by implying that those roiled about the issue are "anti-immigrant" or "impervious" to facts that only those in their perches of erudition can clearly see.

The overwhelming majority of people exercised about immigration are not remotely racist, prejudiced, bigoted or nativist. They are, however, unapologetic patriots, believers in the American ideal, the American identity and the American culture. They are not slaves to an exclusively capitalistic perspective, realizing that economic considerations -- pro and con -- are only one part of the equation.

Maybe if you read post number 2 you will see that I did read his column and even quoted a portion from near the end where I agree with his article.

And while people's attention have been so "absorbed exclusively on this issue" the House used it as cover to stick it to us again.

"America-Herzegovina"?

"Bosnia-California"?

The problem is hyphens. Hyphenated Americans. Hyphenated Republicans. Hyphenated thinking.

JUST PROTECT THE BORDER. It's not complicated.

Some are more concerned about Muslims than Mexicans .... Perhaps we all ought to be ....

That's correct, but the current figures are that only 80% of those crossing the southern border are Mexican.

John McCainiac accused Senator Jeff Sessions of trying to undermine the so called compromise between him and Murdering Ted Kennedy.

I would say that McCain hit that one on the head. Sessions is doing exactly what he should be doing by undermining that compromise. It's a piece of trash that needs to be tossed out.

I am glad there are a few people who are interested in all the issues.

All indications on the Gulf oil deposits are staggering...even Cuba is going to drill 50 miles off our shores. Just a few weeks ago I would have found it hard to believe that the House would dare to this...not with the level of public outrage over the cost of gas and lack of development. Seems all they had to do was wait until everyone's back was turned and slip it to us again.

With all due respect to the casual elite, we are talking about nothing less than the destruction of America as we know it. This will come about not so much by "foreigners," but through our own complicity in devaluing the rule of law by neglecting immigration enforcement and the disgraceful abandonment of our national identity. This will prevent us from promoting the English language, our own sovereignty, our unique constitutional system and our traditional values.

the House voted to kill any chance of drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico?

You and I must live on different planets, the last time I was down on the Gulf I saw oil wells all over.

Anybody ever notice that a compromise is always about how much of your yard you are going to give up?
Like negotiating with a burglar who you "compromise" with and he takes only half of your belongings.

It's like a bad dream.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH REPUBLICANS?

Ap, Today: WASHINGTON - The House rejected an attempt Thursday to lift a quarter-century congressional ban on offshore oil drilling in coastal waters outside the western Gulf of Mexico amid arguments that new supplies are needed to lower energy prices.

A proposal to end the long-standing moratoria as it applies only to pumping natural gas was expected to be voted on later in the evening as lawmakers moved toward late-night approval of a $25.9 billion Interior Department spending bill.

COMPREHENSIVE, COMPREHENSIVE, COMPREHENSIVE

I'm getting so sick and tired of President Bush and the other people that are 'squishy' on borders and uncontrolled immigration saying that ONLY a 'comprehensive' immigration package is acceptable.

Here is my analogy: A 'comprehensive' immigration control package is like:

Refusing to fix the brakes on your car, headed for steep mountain roads with thousand foot cliffs on either side, because you want a new paint job, a new car stereo and new upholstery too.

So, President Bush et al. are willing to drive off a cliff tomorrow because they refused to fix the brakes today..... because they can't get all the feel-good, non-critical changes done today too.

Funny; the politicians who are so good at incrementalism of stealing our rights a little bit every day refuse to use incrementalism on protecting the borders and the soverignty of the USA.

SECURE THE BORDERS FIRST... Build a WALL. Patrol that wall effectively. Stop 95% of the multiple- thousands of illegal alians invaders that are now flooding across the borders every day; (According to local border patrol (rank-and file) officers, the flood has increased significantly since the President and the Senate started spouting their DE-FACTO amnesty nonsense.)

SECURE THE BORDERS FIRST. We can figure out what to do with the current 12-20 million illegal aliens already in the country later. Do it now before there are 60 million illegal aliens to deal with.

SECURE THE BORDERS FIRST: We can develop a guest worker program that will satisfy everyone (other than Vincente Fox and his citizens that want opportunities that they can't find in their own corrupt government and cutlure.)

And while we are building the wall, we can start to enforce the immigration laws that are already on the books, but have been mostly ignored for the last 20 years.

Did I say that this legislation is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad,bad piece of bad legislation.

This bill is absolutely bad for current American citizens.

This bill not only gives amnesty for illegal immigrants immigration and 48 million family members but also exonerates illegal law breakers for Identity Theft.

It relieves them for the responsibility of hurting several million Americans who's Social Security numbers they stole to keep their illegal employment.

It also gives them a big piece of your and my future Social Security.

Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad piece of bad legislation.

It seems apparent thet they do not care about representing us, but want to represent others with our money. I guess there is no longer government by the people, for the people, it is for their people because they sure as heck are not mine. God said help others, he didn't say thing about giving them your country.

Actually, I did read that post.

Maybe it's a comprehension problem?

Maybe if you read David's column and listened to what he is saying you'd understand why our attention is absorbed exclusively on this issue?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough with the joined statements? Usually the "and" serves to clear up any confusion.

But, as with david's column, you don't want to hear.

BTW, is this what is known as thread Hijacking? Attempting to divert attention to another topic? usually border folks are jumped on for that....I've lectured them about it myself. If you want to discuss other matters about the House, there are other threads for that....though it's pretty obvious your real upset is that you wish this issue to die down because it's hurting the precious party establishment. :-)

What is it about "illegal" that they don't understand? What is it about their oaths of office, to uphold the law, that they don't understand?

In order for an oath to mean anything, it has to be sworn by a person of character. There are far to few persons of character in the U.S. senate (small s on purpose). What we have instead are a lot of people that are characters.
