WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales admitted yesterday it's "just not clear" if his Mexican-immigrant grandparents settled in the U.S. legally.
The nation's top cop - who is the first Hispanic attorney general - has become a pointman for the White House on divisive immigration reforms President Bush is pushing.
"Three of my grandparents were born in Mexico. They came to Texas," Gonzales told CNN.
Pressed by Wolf Blitzer, Gonzales conceded he didn't know if they sneaked across the border like millions of illegals at issue in the current debate.
"It's unclear. It's unclear," Gonzales said. "And I've looked at this issue, I've talked to my parents about it, and it's just not clear."
Gonzales has often cited his grandparents' Mexican heritage and his dirt-poor upbringing in Texas in a big family headed by his migrant worker parents.
"My grandparents were Mexican immigrants. I remember visiting them as a very young boy - there was no telephone in their house, no television, no running hot water," Gonzales said during a naturalization ceremony for new citizens in December.
Gonzales is the latest in a series of Washington politicians to talk about their immigrant heritage.
Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.) recently recalled how his illegal Italian-immigrant mother was arrested by the feds in 1943.
In the big scheme of things, you're probably right. There's something wrong with this scenario, but is it Alberto Gonzalez's fault? No. George W. Bush's fault? No. That's because our country grants citizenship to anyone born on US soil. I think that needs to change, but for now it's the law.
Thanks!
I wish this open border mess was funny, but it sure isn't.
Have you ever talked to an illegal from Mexico who didn't think Mexico was better than the USA? I haven't. They love Mexico, and think it is better than the US, except for getting jobs and making money.
You mean it hasn't already? Maybe you don't watch the same newscasts and read the same newspapers as I do. Heck, there are posters on Free Republic (one in particular) who constantly praise illegal aliens and the noble work that they perform for us.
I got that the first time. And the answer still is: WWII--The Aztec Eagles. The AE was a unit of the Mexican Air Force.
Whoever got the idea the place was friendly. These guys ran a revolution that'd curl your hair. Most of them still hate each other's guts.
Interesting overview (political situ) but I don't know how accurate it is:

Gonzales is a liar. He knows that his grandparents came here illegallly, or undocumented.
This guy is our AG?
I agree. I have no problem with his grandparents being illegal. Nor do I have a problem with any others whose grandparents were illegal as long as it was a loooong time ago. Back then there was no welfare, no free medical etc that came out of taxpayers pockets. In doing genealogy to try and find my one great grandfather that I don't know anything about, I found in Texas, especially in the areas I was looking - Medina county and west and south, there was a LOT of mexicans who said they were born in Mexico. Plus the fact that back then there were no terrorists trying to get here.
