WASHINGTON - Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who has pushed a tough border security bill through the House, accused President Bush on Wednesday of abandoning the legislation after asking for many of its provisions.
"He basically turned his back on provisions of the House-passed bill, a lot of which we were requested to put in the bill by the White House," Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., angrily told reporters in a conference call. "That was last fall when we were drafting the bill, and now the president appears not to be interested in it at all."
Sensenbrenner chairs the House Judiciary Committee and would be the House's chief negotiator on any final immigration package for Bush's signature. He said it was the White House that had requested two controversial felony provisions in the bill the House passed last winter.
"We worked very closely with White House in the fall in putting together the border security bill that the House passed," he said. "... What we heard in November and December, he seems to be going in the opposite direction in May. That is really at the crux of this irritation," he said of Bush.
White House spokesman Alex Conant said Bush has been consistent in seeking comprehensive immigration reform. "He applauded the House's action to strengthen our borders and is now urging the Senate to pass a bill," Conant said.
Sensenbrenner spoke with reporters as the Senate worked this week on a broader bill that generally follows the approach Bush laid out Monday night in his nationally televised speech. That includes offering most of the nation's 12 million illegal immigrants an opportunity to eventually become citizens — an act that Sensenbrenner and other conservatives label as amnesty.
"I was very disappointed in the president's speech," Sensenbrenner said. "I think he doesn't get it."
Asked if Bush mollified conservatives in the speech by calling for sending National Guard troops to states along the Mexican border, Sensenbrenner said, "He failed in that completely."
And despite Bush's insistence that he was not calling for amnesty, Sensenbrenner said, "Well it is an amnesty, because it allows people who have broken the law to stay in the country."
"The president has repeatedly and forcefully rejected amnesty," Conant said. "Under his plan, you're going to have to pay stiff fines, follow the law, stay employed, learn English and — after achieving all those things — go to the back of the line."
Sensenbrenner did not attend a closed-door meeting between Bush political adviser Karl Rove and House Republicans, but said that some members complained to him that Rove didn't stay around for many questions or hear what lawmakers had to say.
"The overwhelming majority of those that I talked to who were at the conference believe that he dissed the House Republicans," Sensenbrenner said.
As usual, El Presidente and Rove have sold us down the river for a few more Pesos. It seems Vincente Fox is back in the drivers seat again with Bush locked in the trunk.
He is a honorable man. Takes on issues and fights for them because they are right for this country and the common man.

This is all going to boil down to who is in that conference committee on the HOUSE side.
One the senate side it will be all Rinos and weaklings.

Not a conspiracy nut at all - except for the Fox angle. :) Many PR companies stage protests, even set up dummy NGOs for lobbies, experts for talking head shows, etc. I assumed that was happening given the prevalence of the same professional signs used by protesters at the first protest, all targeting the House bill. All of the sudden ANSWER got involved I suspected a money infusion - they know how to organize.
But I doubt "Bush" was behind it with the money and organization, rather the Chamber of Commerce and similar. The Dallas PR firm was probably just a local hire - or could have been a national organizer.
When I see a big protest I often wonder what the money is behind it. I'm not saying the people on the street are insincere.

I noticed the "Leftist" groups got involved late. I expect they were hired on by the lobbies for their organizational skills.
The protests, especially the first one, was political performance art for the sake of the Senate, a show of force I suspect. Mistake was the order "Bring a flag" LOL.
These had to be planned for the right moment. In this scenario there had to be coordination with Administration. As for the Senators like Kennedy, they just get a bill written by lobbyist shoved in their hands, they gladly take the mistaken credit of having "written" these enormous pieces of complicated text.

In accordance with my #385, I see now Mexico did hire someone.
If they organized the nationwide protests is an open matter for me. But if they did, I suspect due to timing coincidences, it was coordinated with the Administration.
Yes, the House. I make daily contact with Rep. Case (D), HI. He's been supporting the House bill, but no way of knowing whether he did that to exploit the "felony" provision that most Republicans wanted to remove. I understand that Dems would not remove it, thereby encouraging the "back lash" on the GOP. An extraordinary game for these people each day. And the rest of us simply work and pay our taxes.....
I didn't vote for Vincente Fox. It's a shame he gets to dictate our border policies.
BTW, about the Leftist groups hired for their organizational skills...
I noticed on an FR story how the leader of the group, I think ANSWER, was making a statement about how the illegal issue was now of interest to the "revolution" and such.
It was clear to me it wasn't a long held belief, but very recent.

The senate bill is actually relaxing laws that have made it harder for illegals to become legalized.
THAT is the other dirty secret. REPUBLICANS DID DO IMMIGRATION REFORM IN THE 1990's. The laws made it so illegals had to do more hoops and pay more money to become legal via hiding out. For example the change of having to hide for 10 years instead of 6. Part of the reason is THIRD PARTY DOCUMENTS ARE VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY EASY TO OBTAIN, FORGE, OR SIMPLY FABRICATE.
For example a lease can be generated out of thin air. Some landlords will even make one for a price. (records are rarely kept for ten years) They can use someone else doc. PEOPLE RECYCLE OTHER DOCS. Miami lawyers (or notarios more likely) are notorious for recycling same documents for all their various clients. The senate saying they are going to use third party verification is as belivable as "earned citizenship is not a euphamism for slow motion amnesty."
Now Kenedy is selling GUARANTEE (yes all who apply will get it) for the mere price of 2000 dollars. (Or is that 2000 pieces of silver.) The loopholes mean ANY first year lawyer can EASILY navigate the loopholes to make Sen Specter's straight faced statement that citizenship is not guaranteed, a knowing bold faced lie.
We all have our crosses to bear. I'll not share mine. However, that is no excuse for poor treatment of others or accusing them of failings we may also be guilty of. These forums are by nature contentious but they can be civil if we try. Lord knows some of the abuse and ad hominem attacks that get heaped out on folks just because they disagree are hard to take and contribute only to animosity and not to understanding or advancing the conservative cause (as nebulous as that seems at times) I'm done. It looks like it was the Mexican Govt and Vicente Fox who did the hiring of the PR firm. Which makes some sense, Fox is salivating at amnesty.

Maybe the real George Bush was kidnapped in Mexico and Fox substituted a stunt double. (just kidding of course)
Or, he and his family plan on switching Jeb over to the Democratic Party after this election. (a real possibility seeing how they've ruined their names with a lot of conservative voters, and they want to build a family political dynasty)
Or, the Bush family plan on uniting Mexico and the U.S. within 10 years and this is just one step towards a Union of the Americas. (This is another dynasty angle)
All or any of these would explain it. I'm sure there's more possible explanations. Expansion of the political class, money to friends and contributors, and stupidity should always be chosen over wild conspiracies because of their naturally higher probabilities.
