Republicans Vote Against “Secure-First” Approach.
May/16/05 | Screw Boll

Posted on 05/16/2006 11:38:57 AM PDT by screw boll

A republican senator proposed a bill that will prohibit the granting of legal status, or adjustment of current status, to any individual who enters or entered the United States in violation of Federal law unless the border security measures are put up front. I9n other words: secure the borders first! The bill failed passage in a 55-40 vote. The Republicans that voted against this measure along side 36 Democrats and one Independent are as follows: Bennett (UT) Brownback (R-KS), Chafee (RI), Coleman (MN), Collins (ME), Craig (ID), DeWine (OH), Graham (SC), Hagel (NE), Lugar (IN), Martinez (FL), Murkowski (AK), Shelby (AL), Snow (ME),Specter (PA), Stevens (AK), Voinovich (OH), Warner (VA)

This is the group I find most interesting:

Voting for Strict Border Enforcement

Grouped By Vote Position YEAs --- Byrd (D-WV); Conrad (D-ND); Dorgan (D-ND); Landrieu (D-LA); Nelson (D-NE); Stabenow (D-MI); Wyden (D-OR)

Stabenow herself immigrated from Canada.

"Those Republicans and Democrats that voted against the enforcement first amendment endorse Bush's approach. Wrap your mind around that reality."

I know that. But we Conservatives do not support Bush's approach.

That poll oversampled Republicans by about 2-1 and addressed their support of Bush's immigration policy, not his overall policies.

I have not read the bill but....

This seems as striking as the Duncan Hunter bill that put the dems on the spot about removing troops from Iraq.

Again it shows that the Senate is where the REAL problem is.

Even though I disagree with W in part about this issue he did the right thing sending the ball to Congress' side of the net. Seems they missed the ball entirely with this vote.

Simply amazing.

The senate really isn't listening to the people.

As I've said many times, our Republican majority in the Senate is an illusion. Until 7 to 10 of these fakes get tossed in favor of conservatives, we'll get nothing done on this issue, and little done on the other agenda items.

You wrote: Maybe this was the problem. It was added as an amendment to a non-immigration bill."
So, do you think that the Republicans who voted in favor of this bill or not aware of this fact? For all I know, democrats will hold up bills only to stop one amendment.

We certainly knew that some of them were RINOs but now we have drawn out the unknowns.

All well and good except for the fact that we actually CONTROL THE DAMN SENATE which means that the measure should have passed and NONE of the Republicans should have voted against it.

CNN oversampled Republicans? I seriously doubt that. It would be the first time in their history they've over done it.

Thank you for the poll. I wonder if Bush's overall ratings will sky rocket as a result of this speech. Do not hold your breath.

we cannot take them all down at once.......let's pick the biggest rino, and get rid of that one first, and be very public about the intent.......the rest will fall in line

The important part is it must stand on it's own to be effective. Based on the list of amendments it seemed like a pretty packed bill that could risk getting killed..

I can see how this isn't necessarily black and white..

"Seriously, is there anyone who can rationally explain why these R's voted like this?"

Looks like pretty much the "standard bunch of RINOS".

They agree with the President and disagree with you? Just a guess.
