(CNN) -- The following is a sampling of reaction to President Bush's speech on immigration Monday night in which he proposed deploying National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border:
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican:
Rohrabacher, a leading immigration critic in the House, said on CNN's "Larry King Live" that he was "very disappointed" by the speech.
"He's playing these word games about massive deportations again, which no one is advocating and does not do anything to further an honest debate," said Rohrabacher, who also took issue with Bush's distinction between a legalization process for illegal immigrants and amnesty.

Utter nonsense.
Walls WORK.
If you don't believe that, ask Berliners who lived with their own "wall". I saw it personally, and traveled _through_ the Berlin wall in 1971, and viewed it from BOTH sides.
Painful message: it did what it was intended to do. It kept the overwhelming majority of people on one side of the wall from going to the OTHER side.
One can take issue with the purpose of the wall that was built in Berlin: to keep people confined INside. But you cannot argue against its success in doing so.
OF COURSE a few were still able to "get across". A few.
But not thousands
But not millions
But not tens of millions
Or even one hundred million.
The reason the "wall opponents" and open-borders folks are so vehemently opposed to even the NOTION of building a border barrier is BECAUSE it will work. It will work effectively and passively, and will be there for future generations (and political administrations).
One can "turn off" a virtual fence (howls of derisive laughter towards ANYONE who thinks such a concoction can be established). And that's exactly what Hillary is going to do once she assumes power in 2009.

Then it's time to MAKE them listen.
The useless suits are protecting their campaign contribution making companies that hire illegals. Hit them where it hurts - we just did it as an anti=protest not too long ago. I think that's one reason why Bush all of a sudden made this speech, his corporate buddies are worried about profits, because the word "boycott" is being thrown around by both sides.
I know I'll never buy Tyson products, ever.
President Bush (and the rest of the Republicans, for the most part) has shown he will do as competent a job handling the virtual flood of immigration, as Governor Blanco did handling a genuine flood in Louisiana.
Which is to say, "no job at all".
It hurts to realize this, as a Republican and a conservative.
But the truth hurts, indeed.
And one must say it anyway.

If he can't stop unarmed Mexicans from crossing our border then he can't do his job and isn't fit to be President.
Protecting our borders is his first and most important constitutional responsibility as Presideny.
It is not his job to supply his big business buddies with cheap illegal labor and use tax payer money to subsidize their paycheck.
If he can't stop unarmed Mexicans from crossing our borders it is because he is either incompetent or he doesn't want to.
It's no wonder our soldiers [of a superpower] are still getting shot up and killed in Iraq [a stone age country] three years after it should have been over.

Of course he does. By not implementing and enforcing an immigration policy that DOES NOT REWARD illegals, the message continues to be sent to Mexico: You don't have to deal with them, we'll take them.
Yes, his Amnesty program is BS. Yes, his language last night still leave too much capitulation to the invaders possible.
But he's talking a bit tougher than he was a month ago. He is at least getting some extra, although weak tea that it is, help for the Border Patrol.
I'm a lot more hopeful today that we are gaining traction on this issue. I didn't think we were, and it could be smoke and mirrors, but we need to keep up the pressure and not let them settle for half measures and worthless compromises.
What a joke. They can't enforce the laws on the books. Which agency is going to investigate the time the illegal has been here and calculate the amount owed to the country? Do they also get charged for the extra 'perks' such as welfare and medical benefits?
It sounds like total BS and realistically the government is not going to make a serious effort to enforce this action. Pablum.
I didn't say anything about legals, but on illegal deportations, a poll on this would be interesting. Certainly to say "no one" favors it is wrong and ignores reality. A great number do. Whether it's a majority is in question.

patrol, teaching generations of soldiers in South Korea who by now can certainly take care of their own business (or if not why?)
The U.N. has had free service from the United States for years on this one more screw up and nobody says a word about it.
It is time for our military to take care of our own nation on a domestic issue which threatens our own security!!!

We had a baby who climbed over the crib and fell onto the floor. We tied a net over the top. The response was, even from a baby, "Oh you are serious about this." He took the tying of the net to mean time to sleep.
A wall should have been built years ago, at least after 2001, but even now a wall would funnel all kinds of traffic through choak points that would be easier to patrol. We owe nobody a wide open border.
We can pressure him D C, but he is a lost cause, and has his own agenda(whatever the heck it is). I am now convinced that Bush has a messianic complex vis a vis poor mexican peasants(reminds me of Howard Beale in the movie "Network". Still pushing amnesty....jobs americans won't do....blah blah. Keep the pressure up, but don't throw caution to the wind.
It is essential to tell the truth, as painful as it is. One party clamors for open borders. The GOP trembles like rabbits hiding in their warrens.
Bush has the same leadership qualities as his father. He can be counted on to cave in to his critics while treating his supporters like dirt.
We now see the real Bush in action, since he does not have to win another election. No wonder his parents adopted little Bill Clinton.

There is no reason that even a single person that entered or stayed illegaly -- regardless of how long they've been here -- should be allowed to stay and begin the legal process. They all need to go home first.

Just as my paternal grandma and grandpa were LEGAL immigrants at the turn of the last century.
Absolutely, it's an option. And those that say it just can't be done are lying.
Checking citizenship against a database -- not a piece of paper -- at every encounter with police, school, medical care, employment, etc. and then bussing to the border anybody not in the database with a legal right to be here. No hearings, no extensions, just immediate transport out of the country.
How will these people be able to live here if they are denied all public services -- including school -- and employment ? They will self-deport or become criminals. If they become criminals, they will eventually be caught and deported.
As far as actively searching for them and deporting them, I'll bet a $1,000 bonus available to sworn peace officers would search out millions of them and cost us a relative pittance -- a few billion dollars spent on rounding them up would pay for itself in reduced cost of public services.
