President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

I agree with changing the government of Mexico. Creating something resembling a middle class would surely help that change along.

Regarding the bible, the way I see my responsibility to the alien is through the lens of scripture. I must be merciful and compassionate.

That does not prevent me from enforcing the law. But that doesn't mean I can't make sure the kids have milk and a place to lay their heads.

compassion is an attitude of the heart....

Idiot compassion is. Like the compassionate monkey that saw a fish and thought it was drowning so he took it out of the water and put it on the bank.

True compassion is understanding cause and effect in a man's life and knowing that only he can change the course of that. Loving kindness is being ready to help in any way possible. Wisdom is knowing how and when to help.

There is no compassion in filling a man's stomach or his pocketbook by relieving him of his responsibilities in life. Illegal aliens have abandoned their own house in order to be comfortable in ours. By so doing neither can be the master of his own house and both will be enemies in the street. This is our house, the U.S. of A., and it is our responsibility to set the rules in it.

The issue of a guest worker program is separate from the issue of illegal aliens. If illegal aliens take jobs from Americans (and they do) they take even more jobs from foreign nationals who apply by the legal route to work here and wait years for the chance. Illegal aliens steal that chance from them.

They are different groups of people, regardless of their country of origin, and the political issues that concern them are different in their effects and needs. Confusing the two may be lethal to our society, economy and sovereignty.

It would be nice to help everyone in the world lift themselves up out of poverty. But we cannot take that responsibility upon ourselves especially if we ignore our own welfare to the point that we are no longer prosperous.

Other nations of the world have an obligation to help their citizens every bit as much as we have to help ours. It is one thing to help other nations prosper it is quite another to relieve them of their own responsibilities. Beyond that it is simply not realistic to think that poverty can be ended around the world. We still have some in this great nation.

We must stop pandering to American employers who criminally employ illegal foreign nationals. Dry up the jobs and illegal foreign nationals will go home. Home where they can do what they must to put their house in order just as we must put ours in order. Enabling them in abandoning home and country and personal responsibility doesn't simply lack compassion it's cruel. It's a reward for the worst behavior a man can indulge in. Self-interest at all cost.

Voting third party would help how? Its like burning the house to get rid of a few rats. The option would be to work harder in the primaries to get conservatives elected.

I have no problem with legal action against employers, with deportation, with fences, with increased manpower to intercept illegal aliens entering our country. I'm on record here at FR in that regard. Old posts are easy enough to check out.

However, compassion in the way folks are treated has nothing to do with what the final disposition of any case might be.

No one says that a rude, rough approach need be taken while they're being processed.

IF real conservatives bother to run in primaries against Rinos . The best repubs I know are business owners that cannot take the time off their livelihood on a primary chance, and the GOP takes a dim view of primary challengers anyway.

John 10:1 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. ....... 7 Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

Obviously, the verse has absolutely nothing to do with any teaching whatsoever on illegal immigration.

If so then many natural-born Americans are illegal immigrants because they have not come to God through "The Door" who is Jesus Christ.

If one were to use any teachings of Jesus to address the illegal immigration issue, they would include:

"...The only conclusion that I can reach is that FR has become infested with devious trolls posing as disenchanted Republicans..."

Could it be that Republicans have been infested with Trolls, and NeoCons that have no idea what conservatism is about?

Contrary to popular opinion, a lot of the people demonstrating on May 1st were actually LEGAL immigrants, here legally, working legally. Some stores had to shut down because their LEGAL immigrant workers walked out.

My source, NPR, stated Cargill was closing down protest Monday because they employ a lot of "undocumented workers"; that's why I referenced Cargill. I do not agree with your premise that lots of LEGAL immigrants support the illegals. From what I hear from Legal immigrants is they followed the rules and so should everybody else. Do you have a source that supports many legal aliens support the illegal aliens? Not trying to be smart, but I don't see how your statement is true.

This thread is abhorrent to the point that I cannot read any further. I am shocked and ashamed that supposed conservatives would say they would vote for an idiot dem over this border issue.

For those of you saying this, you'd better pull your brain out of your posterior and stick it back in your ear or you just might get what you want. If that happens, have mercy on this country. :/

A local IHOP stayed open but lost a lot of their staff -- and they insisted they had checked the status of all their employees.

We know the leaders of many of the movements are legal immigrants, working for amnesty for the illegals.

There are 10s of millions of hispanics that are legal immigrants and actual citizens. Many DON'T support illegal immigrants, but a good number do.

And the ones that do often are talking about friends and family, and feel very motivated to open our borders -- so I have no doubt you could get a half-million legal people out to fight for amnesty.

I shouldn't have really said "popular opinion". But some acted as if all the demonstrators were illegals, and all we had to do was sweep them up and throw them back.

Yes, they will vote Democrat and socialist economically, BUT as they become more and more dominant, and eventually near parity with whites, they will drag the Democratic/socialist party towards family values and away from abortion.
Or, vice-versa, i.e., they will assimilate into the Democrat Party culture.

My money's on that outcome, as it seems common sense that it's the likely outcome, given the political and social realities. (They will be wooed, nurtured, and cultivated by the DNC minions, and in the process, they will take on the attributes of their mentors.)

In addition, the illegals are our enemies as well. They are breaking our banks, bringing disease, killing and visiting violence upon our citizens causing a 50% increase in those jailed in prisons and they are springing up gangs and creating ghettos.
I live in a rural midwestern area. My county, over the past few years, has ballooned to approx. 15% illegals. The crime rate (in this formerly placid locale) has skyrocketed.

The crime news column in the local paper looks like the Tiajuana White Pages.

Every month or so they find a dead Mexican by the side of the road. A day or two later, his "friends" are arrested for his murder.

I've personally experienced several thousand dollars in property crimes at the hands of "these good people."

Color me disgusted, cynical, and devoid of any hope for a positive outcome to this nightmare that is rapidly snowballing out of control.

I have concluded that we fool ourselves when we think of ourselves as "the base" -- or rather, as I should put it, "the" base.

There are two bases: The voting base (us), and the money base (the lobbyists and "interests" who have a heavy duty stake in maintaining the invasion).

Seems to me like the money base calls the shots, and the voting base gets scolded and told to "Shut Up and VOTE!"

How many American business' need to be shut down to make you happy?
Why don't you ask that question again after the ones that are destroying the country are closed -- or, NOT closed, but, no longer destroying the country?

I can't wait for all the new commie-socialist voters. Their first vote will probably be to shut down internet forums.
Now, now, let's call it by its name: "Communications Reform."

A party leadership turning against a party base is a very ugly thing.

Right again. It's tearing a lot of us up and leads to holding one's nose as they pull the voting lever.

That's a best-case scenario.

Another case of doublespeak in Bush's speech was "no amnesty". He says he opposes amnesty. But what is a guest worker program without enforcement, and with a "back of the line" rule (that's not really the back of the line)? Amnesty. Amnesty with additional flows of labor, to set up the dynamic for millions to be here the NEXT amnesty.
There won't be a "next" amnesty.

When the ink is dry on this one, what we will have is an ongoing amnesty.

The point is, the only power we have is at the ballot box. If our representatives KNOW that conservatives will vote Republican no matter what, who do you think they will be pandering too? Not conservatives, that's for sure.
That's THE key post of the thread.

The whole point of "holding their feet to the fire" is to get them to toe the line, NOT to "make them lose the elections."

Call it "tough love" if you don't like the "feet" metaphor, but it's the same thing. We either demand that they earn our votes, or, we are telling them that they OWN our votes.

There is is, in bumpersticker sized format that anyone can grasp: "Earn 'em, or OWN 'em? Question of the day!"

If they think they OWN our votes, then they are NOT going to do anything to appeal for our votes. They will go after "the other guy's voters". And THAT means that they will lean left, in order TO appeal to those voters.

This is SUCH a simple concept that I am absolutely dumfounded that so FEW seem to get it!

Every time I see someone ranting and raving about "hurting the party" in response to a comment about holding their feet to the fire, I realize that I am listening to either an ignoramus, and imbecile (there is a big difference!), or, a "paid poster" here doing a job.
