President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

The president made no mention of any increase in citizenship quotas.

No, that will be President H. Rodham's job.

No, it will be the voters job not to elect her or are you going to blame Bush for that.

How could the Border control ignore that technology. I mean it would be under there jurisdiction.

A fence is a deterrent, not an absolute barrier. And they are market tested and shown to be effective. That's why there are so many millions of miles of fences built all over the world. If they didn't work, nobody would be building them.

Yep. There's one around the White House.

There are radical fringes in any group, including immigrants.

Many of those di_kless wonders are probably anarchists and communits also who mixed in with the illegals and La Raza crowd.
They are anywhere and everywhere they can be to hurt America.

Yep.....

I guess some of these posters here aren't bad guys either.

But they've bought into the MSM Bash Bush theory.

What's it been? 30-40 years of open borders? Somehow that is all President Bush's fault now.

The President is right. This is not amnesty. He has worked out the best way to get this country out of this mess and keep the economy going.

And for those of you who complain because of references to jobs Americans won't do, can't do, blah blah blah.

Have you EVEN SEEN or SMELLED a chicken factory? Have you smelled it, and seen the people wearing the rubber boots while doing their jobs?

If not, then don't get "all snobby" about jobs Americans won't do, cause I don't think your children would them. Pizza Hut maybe, but not the chicken factories.

When I was 15-20, I worked in grocery stores, and a factory before going to college.

Kids today don't work jobs like that. They walk around with their ipods, laptops, and go to the malls.

Don't bash the President for this situation.

Bash the people who keep raising these spoiled American kids.

I have to agree with the President. There are jobs that aren't being done by Americans.

"Yes, they will vote Democrat and socialist economically, BUT as they become more and more dominant, and eventually near parity with whites, they will drag the Democratic/socialist party towards family values and away from abortion."

Right on.

No solution is perfect. But a wall/fence makes a lot more sense than nothing at all. And it will not cost anywhere close to half a trillion dollars nor take 20 years to build. And I'll bet you know that.

I do, but a wall/fence would be ineffective and expensive. It took Israel years to compelte a portion of its fence and it would be many more years until it's going to be complete. And Israel is just slightly smaller than New Hampshire.

And illegals would find other ways to circumvent a fence and it would take additional billions to maintain such a fence/wall.

I propose lining up skunks for the entire 2,000 mile southern border.

LOL -- I see your humor, but I've seen that fence in person.

The proposed wall/fence will look nothing like that one. Believe it or not, that fence is necessary.

By noticing that illegals are crossing but not doing anything about it. Similar to what is happening now.

Okay....I am not a gifted writer or communicator in this type of venue.

I meant that the government is knowingly ignoring the illegal immigrant among us for their own selfish reasons.

If they were muslims that were hellbent on killing us, there wouldn't be any illegals here at all.

Is that better mojave?

Crawford is essentially a vacation home, just as Reagan's ranch near Santa Barbara was. When Bush retires, he may well move to Highland Park, an elite suburb of Dallas, where he lived when he was owner of the Texas Rangers.

As for Third World countries, you have obviously not been to large swaths of American cities from Los Angeles to Houston, as well as beyond the Border states, where most of the business signs are in Spanish and the ambiance is more that of Guadalajara or Juarez than anywhere in the United States. Perhaps where you live this transition has not happened. If you are lucky, you may spend the rest of your days in some pocket of old America. Others, especially in the Southwest, are not so fortunate.

A major effect of the illegal alien amnesty in 1986 was to place several million Mexicans on the path to U.S. citizenship. These newly minted voters have permanently moved California into the liberal column. Before the 1990s, the state was moderate to conservative politically. Now it is one of the most liberal states in America. Do we really want to see this happen in other states and ensure a permanent Democratic majority in our country?

Ugly, ugly, ugly fence.

And there's never been a fence built that people won't tunnel under or scale.

"Tough stuff..the Americans are closing their borders with compassion. Something even a Frenchman can appreciate if he is wise."

I see no closed border here.

I see a pretense at a closed border.

6000 National Guard, not actually guarding the 2000 mile border, to be withdrawn soon enough. With another 6000 Border Patrol agents to guard a 2000 mile border. That's not a closed border. It's not even close.

A "virtual" border? Sounds very expensive; much more expensive than an Israeli-style WALL, which has been extremely effective. Also sounds not very effective. A virtual border means no border, but sensors. Coyotes run past: the sensor goes off. Tumbleweeds blow past: the sensors go off. Nobody gets picked up unless Border Patrol agents actually go to the spot and catch the border crossers.

The "virtual border" sounds like an open border to me.

Guest worker is amnesty by another name.

"Back of the line" still means "ahead of the line" for every would-be immigrant waiting in a foreign country for the chance to come to America, because the "back of the line" illegal still gets to live and work here while waiting for regularization.

I listened to the President's speech, and what I heard was a man who knows that his political life and that of his party lay in persuading people that he was really going to close the border this time, without, however, taking any decisive step to actually do so.

Right now, America has an open border.
What I heard tonight will make it a little bit more restrictive, eventually, but still open.
And will still leave employers with full access to as much cheap labor as they want...except that guest worker will mean they don't even need to hide what they're doing. They just flat out don't have to hire low-skilled Americans because they can LEGALLY hire unprotected aliens at low wages.

I think that the BorderBots will not be pleased at all.

Certainly from my own perspective, I don't see America closing the borders with compassion. I see compassion, but no real closure of the border.

I blame the MSM (Mass Socialist Media) for what ails most of us. They are using their version of the fairness doctrine. We have talk radio and by doggies, they have the remainder of media outlets. The MSM want to dictate what all Americans think. Some of us won't buy into their unadulterated spin and vicious lies. They will label us as racists concerning almost anything that achieves their purpose. Everything from the IA issue to the Duke rape case to Hurricane Katrina floods, the MSM will attach racism to us if we so much as appear to be disagreeing with their opinions and written words.

Take MSNBC as an example. It seems to me that since Rick Kaplan took over that their sole mission is to discredit, dismantle and destroy the Republican Party, Conservatives included. I would almost bet my last dime that Matthews, Olbermann, the O'Donnells, Imus and those other leftists losers are working for a big fat bonus to defeat the Republican Party at every level of government.

I'm not implying we are losing the battles for political thought. I'm just stating my personal thoughts about the manipulation of the MSM and their blatant attacks on all Republicans. We just have to work harder to keep our base and maintain out majority on the Federal level and increase them on state and local levels.
