I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim
When we elect a man, we get the whole package.
Whether it's a bible-toting intern chaser or an alien-forgiving evangelical, their faith and character are part of the deal.
We get a man....not a god of perfection who satisfies one's every desire.
So, if you're a one-issue poster against illegal immigration and want to resort to radical measures to combat it, does that really qualify you as a conservative?
Thus, we will get Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, etc., or their cohorts, into Congress irrespective of what conservatives or Republicans do. The President's proposals will not effectively forestall a political shift that will return the GOP to minority status and exile political conservatism, traditional moral values, and free market economics into oblivion.
Tancredo doesn't think it's amnesty. Neither does Lou Dobbs.
Just some unappeasable freepers. Some things never change.
"Its like the government shut down during the Clinton Administration. Congress rattle its sabre at Clinton, so Clinton preempted Congress by framing the argument in the media, before the Republicans could retaliate"
Except that Clinton was a Democrat, and so had the bullhorn of the media, while the Republican Congress was shutout.
Reverse the roles, and the President will be mostly cutout, while Pelosi and Reid, Kennedy and the other Democrats in Congress have the bullhorn.
Remember when President Bush 41 wanted to give a nationally televised speech in the spring of 1992, and NONE of the American television networks would carry him? In their estimation it was a "political" speech and not really a "policy" speech, so they refused to give the President of the United States airtime. Meanwhile, Clinton was blowing his saxophone on Leno.
There is a non-reciprocity to American media coverage and the "drumbeat". Also, that won't happen until the people have had another year and half to get well and truly sick of Iraq.
I truly think that both sides were one move from checkmate tonight, with Bush having the first move, but that he remained stubborn instead of caving to his base, as he needed to do. As a result, I believe that the Democrats just scored a de facto checkmate. I am really sorry about it too, but that is what I see as having happened.
FROBL's
Free Republic's Old Broad Ladies???
"No ~LOL~ I just now went back and read it... great minds? People (government included) need to get beyond the emotionalism (on both sides) and think this thing through before it's too late."
Yes, I agree with you.
I have seen many of your posts concerning this issue. You live in an area where this issue is much more near and dear to your livelihood than mine, for instance.
Hi ya Rod!
1 hour and 15 minutes until my date w Jack Bauer ;-)
Hope all is well w you! I was just lurking and decided I had to jump in - - I'll be jumping out soon. If I don't see you before then, I'll try to see you next Sunday :-)
Apparently you don't know anything about Cuba. Let's just say you wouldn't enjoy living in Cuba. Mexico, on the other hand, is a great place to visit and not a bad place to live, as long as you stay out of trouble with the law.
It was God's rules and not theirs.
It was when they IGNORED God's instructions that they got trouble, not when they followed them.
I agree, and that should be in the compromise bill, but it won't be.
You can check Michelle Malkin's blog archives - she wrote at least one article about Myers' appointment and qualifications (lack of) for the job.
Neither Tancredo nor Dobbs think it's amnesty and in fact, based on some freeper posts and reports on various threads, they both liked the plan and the speech.
I would love just as much as anyone to see all illegals turned away, even shot with rubber bullets as the come across, but that simply isnt reasonable, feasible or poltically responsible.
It's the last half of your sentence that shows your true RINO colors. You won't stand on the principles you annunciate in the first half of your sentence (the turning away part).
I was talking about the newbie who attacked Card -- ideas-over-party or whatever.
You would think we would learn by observing what is happening in France, Sweden, Holland, etc. as the result of unhampered illegal immigration.
