I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

No doubt about it. "Complete with biometric data", those were his words " biometric Data"
After the courts get through with it all this damn debate is going to bring us is a watered down amnesty program and the issuance for us all of a "National Right to Work" ID.
NO one can be happy with this, the damn card will probably have medical records, biometric data, gun permits and all criminal records including traffic fines available anytime you scan it.
He did. It just wasn't strong or realistic. He laid out a plan that started with border security. (same as mine)
Then he addressed what to do with the illegals here. (not good, not well thought out and it skipped the necessary 2nd step of cracking down on employers)
Then he addressed how employers need the tools to verify the status of employees. (necessary in order to demand a crackdown)
He said this needs to be all done together in order to work. (not absolutely true but has a grain of wisdom to it)
Beyond that he's going to put the Nat. Guard on the border. (Not enough but he set a precedent, for recent times anyway. A lame gesture or not; it will make it easier to put more troops on the border in the future when it really gets hairy down there.)
He did less than I wanted and more than I expected. It doesn't make me happy and it doesn't make me mad. Congress will do that. As usual.
I'm not saying that I want it to happen, I'm just saying that it will happen. Bush and Frist are seen as the leaders of the GOP and a sizable portion of conservative voters are just fed up with the GOP in general and just stay home.
Their own GOP representative may be doing a great job, but he might get caught up in the general disappointment.
As another poster said, "a falling tide lowers all boats".
You really do protest too much.
"What is the "final solution"?"
I am glad someone caught the faux pas. I missed it until I read it later. I would like to send as many of the illegals back to Mexico (or whatever country of origin) as possible.
To say that any one idea is unworkable because it will not return them all is stupid. If we have 3 ways to move them back to the border and each is 31 % effective, we can help get to 93%. I will settle for less.
NO amnesty!
Sorry for the racist implication.

"I haven't seen anyone seriously advocating mass roundups."
Mass roundups are NOT necessary! If their employers are sanctioned, they will get the hint. Most have too much invested in this country (cars, homes, etc) to see them lost due to unemployment. They will sell out and go back. Then return when they can do so legally.
This is not the final solution (that is 100% effective) but if we can reduce the presence to 10%, we are millions ahead.
That's not my quote.
LOL! Another great idea!
O.K. - thanks for the clarification.
Aw geesh....get off the computer and go outside and get some fresh air.
"Not only is it not enough..but there are no plans to fully double it until 2008. What a crock!"
Hmm, perhaps you weren't quite listening to the full details - the NG is going down their SOON and will work there until the additional BP can be hired and trained - - as the BP transitions in, the NG will transition out and that, with the walls in the urban areas and the virtual walls in the rural areas, drones, sensors, etc. should be completely in place in 2008.
even if that number is exaggerated, I forget the Heritage Foundation numbers - we'll have to drop all pretense of environemntal regulation to build the infrastructure needed.
Until JFK, the black vote was cast for the GOP candidates, by about 99%. Even Nixon got a lot of black votes and his nomination was seconded, at the GOP presidential Convention, in 1968, by a black woman delegate from Chicago.
There's where you made your mistake...I'd say most conservatives vote Republican, but most Republicans are not very conservative...
Conservatives lost nothing because, tonight, they started with nothing and wound up with nothing.
bttt
Indeed. Voters in midterm elections tend be much more in tune with politics then those in presidential election years. PR stunts used to placate the politician's own supporters have a very slim chance of being successful.
"We came when there WAS NO "IMMIGRATION" LAW, but what laws there were got enforced. We ask no different now. NOW there ARE IMMIGRATION LAWS, and all we're asking is that they get enforced."
Plus, when immigrants came here then, they didn't misuse our system by hopping onto welfare, getting food stamps, using our education system for free, swamp our hospitals, have others pay for their social services. It was sink or swim back then. Now its use and then use some more by the illegal immigrants. And make sure to have an anchor baby as fast as you can.
