.......and as a post script, the president indicated that this policy will be enforced when the next president takes office, if he/she is willing to enforce it. However, because of the Latino blood in his family tree, he will forgo the implementation of this directive himself. </sarcasm)

Good. The President is solving the problem. BTW, watch the film, "Gangs of New York" when you can. ...great movie about one of our worst immigration problems (even the fascism that led to the current immigration craze) and hordes of foreigners from a culture other than ours.

Any plan that does not include a) a requirement that citizenship cannot be granted to any person here illegally (those here illegally must first beome legal residents,) b) a permanent, irrevocable prohibition against anyone who enters the US illegaly after a specified future date ever being granted either legal residency or citizenship, c) stiff penalties for being here illegally, will not gain the support of the American electorate, and will outrage the Republican base.

The get-tough approach will be coupled with a renewed push to give illegal aliens a chance to get in line for U.S. citizenship, said a source briefed on the speech.

As long as they get in line in their country of origin I have no problem with this.

The virtual fence could include lasers

Ooohhh...fricking laser beams....

President Bush plans to call for troops and a high-tech "virtual" fence to beef up the border with Mexico when he speaks to the nation on immigration Monday night, sources said yesterday.

I like it.

Yeah, well there wasn't any law preventing the Irish from emigrating to the U.S.

Having "Latino blood" in the family doesn't necessarily mean one is pro-illegal immigration.

More importantly, the Irish spoke English, we had plenty of room for them at the time, and since there was no Welfare state adding population didn't create a burden on legal-resident taxpayers.

"He'll talk about deploying troops, strengthening border control, more raids on companies that hire illegals, a virtual fence, and letting those who are here already get in line," the source said.

The line begins in Mexico City and in other capital cities around the world where we have our Embassies. Because there is nothing less 'American' than cutting in line in front of those who follow the rules.

As for troops on the border? National guard troops? No, thank you, but there are plenty of regular Army troops sitting around. Rotate them through border watch, build the bases, get it done right rather than temporary camps that will be easy to back out of later on.

After all, that is the job of the military - national defense. And considering that most foreseeable missions on the horizon right now involve desert deployment, this is probably a great training idea as well.

As for when - troops can be deployed and be on station within a week. Mexico officials will scream bloody murder - they'll loose all that fun bribes for ignoring drug runners, gun runners and people runners. Bush has shown a willingness to thumb his nose at Europeans, it's about time we thumb our nose at the crooks south of our border.

Oh, and all those troops stationed in Germany would work REALLY well along the Canadian border as well.

Boob Bait for Bubbas. Mollify gullible conservatives with temporary measures and tough talk, while providing permanent amnesty to 12 million.

Count me as a skeptic. The troops are temporary at best and will likely spend most of their time rescuing lost and stranded "migrants."

A virtual fence is like virtual sex - not very satisfying. Why settle for virtual? Build it already.

TOO little, TOO late, IMO.

The "get in line" thing sounds a lot like "amnesty".....NO GO!

Just WHAT has Vincente Fox "got" on GW that makes our President so weak on illegal immigration? Hmmm? (Just MO).

Well said and true. This kind of window dressing means nothing. The illegals will remain, the Border Patrol will be hampered and our rights as citizens will continue to be eroded in favor of developing a North American economic bloc at the expense of the United States of America. Jorge Arbusto has demonstrated his firm commitment to that agenda since 2000.

Oppose the "One Face at the Border" initiative Email your Members of Congress asking them to oppose the "One Face at the Border" initiative

In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the creation of a new Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) position and the “One Face at the Border” initiative. Under this plan, a new position, the CBPO, would combine the duties of legacy inspectors from Customs, the Immigration and Nationalization Service (INS) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) into a single front-line border security position. With 41,000 employees, CBP is in control of 317 official ports-of-entry for travelers and cargo.

Essentially, the “One Face at the Border” initiative was aimed at unifying the inspection process that travelers entering the United States have to go through. Instead of making three stops – an Immigration Inspector, a Customs Inspector and an Agriculture Inspector – travelers would meet with a single primary inspections officer who was specially trained to do the job of all three.

Consolidating these three organizations has caused logistical and institutional chaos and has taken attention away from critical homeland security priorities. It is true that all three of these organizations deal with front line border and port security, but they do so in very different capacities.

Please email your Members of Congress asking them to oppose the "One Face at the Border" initiative and support a detailed, independent review of the proposal.

Please help,we have been trying to fight illegal immigration, we are inside the "system"...and we are fed up with the lax immigration policies of congress/and this and previous administrations.

Thank you.

If Bush wants to score points on Monday night he should leave out the Amnesty dribble. Americans clearly are not interested in that part.

"letting those who are here already get in line"

People unclear on the concept. A line is something which, if you are in it, you are not yet at the place the line is entering, and you are patiently waiting your turn, allowing others who were there before you to go first. Illegals are not in line. Illegals have jumped the line, denied the need for a line, scoffed at the mere existence of something so orderly as a line. The only way for them to get in one, is first to leave, and then patiently wait their turn.
