Any plan that does not include a) a requirement that citizenship cannot be granted to any person here illegally (those here illegally must first beome legal residents,) b) a permanent, irrevocable prohibition against anyone who enters the US illegaly after a specified future date ever being granted either legal residency or citizenship, c) stiff penalties for being here illegally, will not gain the support of the American electorate, and will outrage the Republican base.

Absolutely right. The only encouragement I've gotten lately is a statement by Chip Reid of NBC News that the House Republicans will not cave on amnesty.

The only illegals that should be given a pass are those who are thoroughly imbedded. To me that means they must have been here for at least ten years. So we start with the relative handful who have children who have grown up in the country. But the way to go is through a policy of attrition. Go after the landscapers and builders who habitually and knowlingly hire illegals. ICE already knows who they are, or can find out easily enough.
