CARRBORO, N.C. -- A Carrboro alderman wants to make his city the first in North Carolina to let noncitizens vote.
At a meeting Friday between the Board of Aldermen and the Orange County legislative delegation, John Herrera asked the state lawmakers to take the topic to the General Assembly.
Herrera, a U.S. citizen who is a native of Costa Rica, said allowing future U.S. citizens and legal residents to vote in municipal elections will put them on the path to citizenship.
"In Carrboro, we would really like to be the pilot project in this," Herrera said.
Sen. Ellie Kinnaird and Reps. Joe Hackney and Verla Insko, all Democrats, said they liked the idea, but it would require amending the state constitution.
That means it would be more appropriate to raise it during a long session of the Legislature, that starts after the fall elections, not the short one that is under way now.
"This is a huge issue _ I mean huge _ if this is going to be a constitutional amendment," said Kinnaird, a former mayor of Carrboro. "So planting the seed in our minds is a good start."

John Herrera, being a naturalized citizen, should know enough about the US Constitution and US History to realize what he is advocating is unlawful and very harmful.
That's why we changed the law.
Aliens can vote now with a driver's license, thanks to motor voter laws.
I lived in Carrboro for a year. I didn't even know that we had aldermen.
Watch closely as we witness the extinction of the GOP.
I live just down the road from Carrboro and I can tell you what this is all about...
1) The Carrboro/Chapel Hills areas (they border each other at UNC Chapel Hill) is basically the Berkeley of North Carolina. Every left wing freak in the state has been there. The North Carolina IMC server is hosted there.
2) North Carolina is the number one state that illegals want to go to because they require almost nothing to get a drivers license. It's actually advertised as such on spanish radio.
3) This voting measure will be implemented like this: Anyone who shows up to vote won't need to show any citizenship... just a drivers license. Therefore ANYONE with an NC license can vote... INCLUDING ILLEGALS.
This is how Democrats plan to stay in power here and elsewhere.

I think this sort might oppose that scenario, but only because others feeding at the trough might threaten his share. These people don't see America, they only see an open storehouse of treasure.
Outside of the cities most of us are very conservative. Come to Smithfield... you'll be very welcome here.
Of course John HERRERA would want illegals to vote. Deport hell. He needs to be taken out and strung up. The boy seems to have missed the part about the U.S. Constitution. He's no U.S. citizen.
This is insane.
We bought some land a few miles south of Black Mountain. I'm hoping we'll be OK there....
