Randi Anderson knew she was on her own the day her son was born 22 months ago when she drove herself to the hospital.
Long before Anderson pulled up to Swedish Medical Center, her film-school boyfriend was gone.
Twenty hours after she arrived at the hospital, she joined the growing ranks of single mothers.
It is a group that often feels isolated, suffers higher-than-normal rates of depression and believes it carries a stigma in a culture that celebrates marriage.
"I certainly feel like it's written across my face," Anderson, 34, said.
"We've been told it's not OK to be a single mom."
Mother's Day is increasingly celebrated without fathers in this country.
In 2004, 36 percent of all births were to unmarried women, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, even as the teenage pregnancy rate fell...
Anderson's decision created obstacles many couples don't face -- two fewer hands to change diapers, feed the baby and give baths -- she used her experiences to create a new resource for Seattle's single mothers.
Sunday, Anderson will celebrate Mother's Day with other single moms at a potluck brunch, marking the six-month anniversary of the support group, Single2Mother, an online community that she founded.
The group represents one of a few private efforts to help single mothers, whose numbers jumped from 3 million in 1970 to 10 million in 2000.

Yep, she should have kept those darn legs closed until she was in a commited relationship (i.e. marriage). A bit hard for me to cry any tears for her.

She may be getting government assistance for all I know, but the article is about an on-line support group she set up -- a way to get advice and support without involving the government.
"in a culture that celebrates marriage" -- she's kidding, right? Every famous celeb is having babies out of wedlock. Marriage is hardly celebrated. Maybe the stigma is hers and she is projecting. Or maybe it really IS Bush's fault.
Women like Randi intentionally create problems, and it is unfortunate that the taxpayer has to finance them.
It would be nice if people were held accountable, but unfortunately, we have a government that encourages the "victim" groups. Every time a new victim group arises, they create another branch of the government to take care of them. You'd think it was "their" money the way they throw it around. One of these days, they're going to figure out that destroying the middle class wasn't such a smart thing to do because nobody is going to be able to fund all these victim groups!

I was a young female once myself. I've had guys come on to me too. It only took one word to stop them....no. I knew that having a baby out of wedlock was not a road I wanted to travel. A baby needs a mother and a father who are both mature enough and financially ready to take care of it. No one had to sit me down and explain this over and over again. Anyone with an ounce of sense can figure it out.
You're going a bit overboard with this. She made a mistake. With help, she's trying to turn it into a blessing

It wasn't a mistake. It was a bad choice. Now she's gotta live with it.
Isn't that the truth... It's sad and make conservatives look like what the left says we are.
Those are good questions, and I didn't forget them, I was merely making a singular point.

Lol! I'll be rockin' til the day I die! I'm no rocket scientist, but honestly if I can figure it out, anybody can.
So why are there so many single mothers who whine because daddy's not around? That's something I'll NEVER understand.
Unfortunatly for me, I had -several- girlfriends with that same belief, darn it!
