Bagels, spaghetti, and pizza are food. Those Europeans came from across an ocean, and probably didn't expect to visit their native countries again. Mexican immigrants have a home country neighboring the United States and have come in much larger numbers in sheer volume (rather than percent). While many Mexican immigrants assimilate, the amount that don't seems to be huge, and is a threat to the United States cultural integrity.

"Mexican Americans feel increasingly comfortable with their own culture and often contemptuous of American culture"

And well they should it is shameful that they are ready to give up their identity, citizenship and culture for a few bucks. Shame on them!! And to insist on citizenship even tho they really don't care about it is unfair to us. This is not a healthy environment for anyone so deport all of them!

Yes, it appears on the surface that most illegals are here for the economic benefit and are not interested in either being legal or deserting their own country which allows them to live quite nicely after working here for a number of years.

Tacos, enchiladas and burrtos are good too. But they need to be LEGAL!

True, but too many cooks spoil the broth.

We have never been a melting pot. Blacks, American Indians, and Mexican-Americans remain distinct racial groups. Until recently, even WHITE people were segregated (Anglo, Italian, Jewish). The whole "melting pot" concept was socialist anyway ("all united in the class struggle) and an INVENTION of early 20th century propaganda.

I'll disagree with this. Speaking from Los Angeles I can say many, maybe most LEGAL Mexican assimilate very well. I see them literally everyday in their souped up expensive custom pickup trucks at Best Buy buying a big flat screen TV.

ILLEGALS gon't assimilate.

How about we get rid of just the ones who refuse to assimilate then?

The pot of Americans:

pure water, bacon grease and cooking oil. It settles out in layers based on density.

It only melts together when things are hot and the pot is stirred.

Communications technology, cheap travel, and efficient distribution of products have created links back to "home countries" for immigrants. These links didn't exist 100 or even 60 years ago.

Conversely, the spread of a global popular culture didn't exist even 20 years ago.
