Bagels, spaghetti, and pizza are food. Those Europeans came from across an ocean, and probably didn't expect to visit their native countries again. Mexican immigrants have a home country neighboring the United States and have come in much larger numbers in sheer volume (rather than percent). While many Mexican immigrants assimilate, the amount that don't seems to be huge, and is a threat to the United States cultural integrity.

"
Mexican Americans feel increasingly comfortable with their own culture and often contemptuous of American culture" And well they should it is shameful that they are ready to give up their identity, citizenship and culture for a few bucks. Shame on them!! And to insist on citizenship even tho they really don't care about it is unfair to us. This is not a healthy environment for anyone so deport all of them!

Yes, it appears on the surface that most illegals are here for the economic benefit and are not interested in either being legal or deserting their own country which allows them to live quite nicely after working here for a number of years.

We have never been a melting pot. Blacks, American Indians, and Mexican-Americans remain distinct racial groups. Until recently, even WHITE people were segregated (Anglo, Italian, Jewish). The whole "melting pot" concept was socialist anyway ("all united in the class struggle) and an INVENTION of early 20th century propaganda.

While many Mexican immigrants assimilate, the amount that don't seems to be huge, and is a threat to the United States cultural integrity. I'll disagree with this. Speaking from Los Angeles I can say many, maybe most LEGAL Mexican assimilate very well. I see them literally everyday in their souped up expensive custom pickup trucks at Best Buy buying a big flat screen TV.
ILLEGALS gon't assimilate.

How about we get rid of just the ones who refuse to assimilate then?

Respectfully, you can't make comments about all Mexican Americans. As such, your comment is wrong. There are usually exceptions to the rule.
To: BunnySlippers
Your comment on how immigrants should be legal is correct.

'Melting pot' America Some one should remind the BBC that you don't really become an American till your willing to shoot a few old country blood cousin's, in defense of your new "new country-Melting pot" brother American's........The BBC of the 21 Century just seem to remind me of that fact

The concept of there being races of humans (in the modern sense of race) is a socio-cultural construct, not strongly based upon science or genetics. Americans can be simply Americans. Some can be of a dark complexion with a tight, curly 'fro; some can be of a pale complexion with round eyes; some can have slanted eyes, etc. There CAN be one American race (using the old sense of race as nationality or ethnicity (grouping people based on a common culture)).
To: BunnySlippers
Note Mexican immigrants, not illegal aliens. immigrants are taken to be legal.

as if things were that easy. Having protesters wave around American flags suggests that at least some are willing to mislead.

This article doesn't really say anything.

About this comment 16, agreed. There is an American Civilization, and it should be protected.

The concept of there being races of humans (in the modern sense of race) is a socio-cultural construct, not strongly based upon science or genetics.
I'm sorry, but this is simply incorrect.
There are very real and distinct genetic differences between the races that extend the spectrum of human variability, from skin color to hormone sensitivity to susceptibility to various toxins to predisposition to genetic diseases.
There are absolutely acientific and genetic difference between the races.

Did you know that Germany and Ireland don't share a border with the US? Mexico does. Do you think this might make mass immigration from Mexico different than mass immigration from Germany or Ireland? Do you think this might affect assimilation?
