My take on Bush’s poll numbers
my fertile mind | 05/12/2006 | me

Posted on 05/12/2006 2:11:31 PM PDT by Pharmer

Do you ever feel like your in an alternative reality? These days I do! Some things do not make sense!

How can we be in the middle of a time where we are actively pursuing an enemy who has been a thorn in America’s side for nearly 30 years (since the overthrow of the Shah of Iran) and winning the fight to boot, and yet we are told that America has lost it’s stomach for a fight? If the war sucks so bad, where are the soldiers coming home with tales of horror and woe? Where are the cargo planes of our dead soldiers massacred by those ferocious freedom fighting insurgents? My parents told me and I remember wars of much greater horror. My aunt lost 2 fiancés during WWII, one in the Pacific and one in Holland. My uncle was maimed at Normandy. I lost a good friend in Vietnam. I do not know anyone who has been killed or wounded in Iraq and I know 5 people who are over there now. Not that I don’t feel for those who have loved ones who were killed or injured, but we have suffered a lot worse and persevered on. Yet the polls say we should cut and run and by no means goad that little madman in Iran! We must do nothing to stop him from getting nukes!

How can the stock market be at record highs, consumer confidence is up, unemployment is low, inflation is almost non-existent except at the gas pump, GPD is up and yet we are told that the economy sucks according to the media polls? How can this be? Well for what its worth I think it is all BS. If the economy sucks so badly why are Americans spending their hard earned money like drunken sailors? After all a robust economy is a sure sign that America is quite content. Content enough to invest our money in the stockmarket, to buy the XBox 360 sight unseen! Fed saw fit to raise interest rates to cool things off. These are not signs of a malcontented populace! Yet the polls tell us that things suck and America is on the wrong track.

Are all the polls wrong or is there genuine malcontent here at home? Are we being lied to by a liberal media seething with rage at the fact that Bush is in the White house and their lies have taken hold in our collective perception? Well yes an no.

First of all I really think it is too simplistic to directly correlate Bush’s poll numbers to gas prices. I don’t really think any one single issue has produced these types of results to a survey. First of all a poll is like a scientific experiment. The results often reflect the kind of question asked. It is up to the designer to determine whether the answer is positive or negative. As the commissioners of the poll determine the wording of the poll, seeking a desired result is not hard. But still are these fools such grand illusioners that we all are snowed? Well it’s not just them.

Remember I said I don’t know anyone who has died in Iraq? Well we all know someone who hates Bush…viscerally. We could be sitting at the lunch table having a pleasant conversation about baseball.

“Hey Joe, who are the Phillies playing tonight?” “Texas Rangers”

And then at the other end of the table, HE starts and goes on and on and on! He can’t shut up! And he is a real bummer! And then he gets in all of our face and says “Doesn’t this really bother you!!?? Don’t tell me this doesn’t bother you!!!!!!!!” This guy will only be satisfied if Bush is drawn and quartered! To hell with impeachment, perp walk him out if the White House in an orange jump suit! Oh and lets not forget Cheney!!!! HALIBURTON!!!! We can’t even use the cell phone!! We can’t go to the bathroom without Bush finding out! At any other time we would tell this guy to take off his tin hat and find a girlfriend. But we haven’t. And this vitriol while not affecting our daily activities has made us second guess our votes. Our natural instincts as in all things is to jump on the band wagon or on this case to pile on in order to avoid a fight.

We aren’t helping, and we are getting almost as mad as these liberal nutcases.

“Secure the border!” Right on I say!!

“Throw out the wetbacks! Especially the Mexicans!!!” I totally agree. Words mean things and “illegal” means “its agin the law ya moron!”

“Stop the spending!” Even if we need to rebuild the military? Even if we are to rebuild after a natural disaster as required by law? Oh I forgot the hurricanes Those were Bush’s fault too!

“Prescription drugs for Medicare??” Forget that we might have split the AARP voting block and deprived the Dems of an issue that they would have done nothing on even given the opportunity because they are more about bitching and moaning than actually fixing or even attempting to fix a problem. Not to mention the spineless reaction by Bush’s Republican collegues in Congress who hung him out to dry on Social Security reform, an issue he ran on!

And lets not forget Harriet Miers! Oh NOOOO!!! Oh I forgot… she withdrew and we got Sam Alito… You guys got to let this stuff go!!

But at some point one needs to get a breath and ask, What would John Kerry do? So Its time to get off the pig pile and start asking am your are still a Republican our am I a spineless independent moderate middle of the roader? If you are spineless independent moderate middle of the roader, look out cause the Dems are going to run you over!

Did we vote right? Your damn right we did and I for one am proud to be in the 29th percentile! But I don’t believe that 29% number. I don’t think Americans are that stupid. I just think that given a stupid question a stupid answer follows. If America thought things were that bad don’t you thing that it would have some reflection in reality?

We already know a lot of these polls are more heavily weighted with Democrats. How do we know that the numbers they give are really the right numbers? What if they are completely lying and the numbers representing Democrats are even greater than what they admit? Considering how the Left is able to come up with the same word or phrase to repeat over and over just about every day, wht couldn't they also conspire to lie about the poll numbers to pump up the Left and deflate the Right?

Gee, that one still stings a little, doesn't it? Come on, don't be a sore winner.

; )

The same folks who dumped Harriet and Brownie and stuck the fork into Dubai are the same ones demanding closed borders and mass deportations. The Republican majority is in danger over this issue and, consequently, Bush faces becoming the Dims' bitch in 2007 if the GOP doesn't all toe the line. And they don't like it one bit. Too bad.

The real secret to the modern strength of the Stupid Party comes down to mostly just one thing: when the base cracks the whip, they sit up and obey.

This is why the Dims are weak. It's their completely top-down leadership style. In the GOP, if the base is determined enough, we actually can make things change. And there's little point in a democracy if that can't happen. Just one more reason why Dims are increasingly repulsive to the voters... well ... beyond their already well-known repulsive qualities.

Damned slimy politicians...

Americans today are far softer than a few generations ago.

We are weaklings, and it will show.

Sorry, but we already are in many respects. Maybe 25-35% of Americans actually care. The others don't give a dang (insert other colorful 4 letter word here if you like). If there is nothing in it for them, line their pockets, etc., they don't care. Period.

For the rest of us, it's the open borders and wastrel spending.

Much as I hate to admit it, actually I think they can get away with the LBJ-would-blush spending. People only grumble about that.

But the borders/illegals is more like Harriet or Brownie/FEMA or Dubai. And it's not just the base. It's a lot of the conservative political press. What I find interesting is that the conservative pundits are already telling them they'd better give in on the borders/amnesty thing before it's too late. See Sowell, National Review, etc.

The illegals thing makes a visceral connection with people on a whole range of other issues. No two conservatives formulate the same way but they are all fixated on one solution: close the borders, deport the illegals, then consider a proper immigration policy.

Bush's poll numbers are in the tank because conservatives are pissed with him. He was never going to get the Dems to be happy with him except in the immediate aftermath of 911. He used to have positive ratings from more than 80% of conservatives. Now its a little over 50%. It's not only gas prices, its the port deal, amnesty for illegals, lack of border enforcement, spending like a drunken sailor, lack of vetos, wasting months on Social Security reform only to walk away from it without a vote.

You are right, and I am one of those angry Conservatives. We are with Dubya on the war, but he takes us for granted and has abandoned us on almost every other issue. At home, his effective surrender to Democrat domestic policies is evidenced by the lack of a single Bush veto in five and a half years. Pork barrel spending (by the GOP!) is unchecked and spiralling out of control. But what really frosts me is Bush's absolute refusal to enforce our immigration laws.

Basic first aid teaches that the first life-saving step is to stop the bleeding. Securing the border is the only logical way to stem the Mexican invasion. But at the same Dubya has refused to protect the border, he has cut the enforcement strength of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ordered an effective moratorium on rounding up and deporting alien lawbreakers. Bush's refusal to enforce existing laws amounts to DERELICTION OF DUTY. His active subversion of those same laws is even worse.

1) Illegals and Open Borders
2) Gas prices due to lack of drilling and refineries
3) Iraq War being fought with too much PC

You're:

1) Nitpicking;
2) Forgetting all the good things he's done;
3) A lousy troll!!

That's right. Stop the Bush bashing. I am with the President. We are at war, He needs and deserves our support. Stop this nonsense about sitting out the next election. I am wondering if some of the bashers are really republicans. The President is bashed daily on tv, we can disagree with some things but still support him. While I'm at it will everyone who hasn't seen it go see United 93.
I should be #1 at the box office.

Go away!! I am so sick of hearing all the bashing every where I turn. You would think we could hear something good here. But no, same old DU and media doom and gloom. Our heroic troops don't deserve such a pathetic press and public. God bless them and our president. We have become weak, pampered and spoiled.

Hey if you dont like it, why you go way and dig your head in the sand. GeeI thought we conservatives dealt dealt with reality and not with fairytales. And what does any of what I listed as reasons for Bush's popularity problems with conservatives have to do with our heroic troops. You seen to have difficulty dealing with more than one issue at a time. Under your way of thinking, if we complain about Bush's total disregard for our borders, then we are dissing our troops and putting them in harms way. That is as ridiculous as was most of your rant.

Our troops also deserve much better from their president. They deserve a president that can capably defend his policies and occasionally show a little passion about something.
