US President George W. Bush waves as he walks to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC. on May 11. The United States must talk directly to Iran about its disputed nuclear programme because Tehran will not negotiate seriously if Washington is not involved, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said.(AFP/Mandel Ngan)

plans to address the nation Monday night on the immigration debate, trying to build momentum for legislation that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens.
Waste of time, we are not buying it. He still doesn't get it.

Enforce the existing laws before you make new ones!!
What part of this doesn't he understand?!
If the government doesn't care about this law, why should we care about obeying any law?
Chaos is coming ......and then dictatorship.....
It happens in every empire.....it is inevitable!!

I can live with an eventual program to naturalize the current Mexicans. But man, if he does not put that aside and announce he got the message that he has to control the border and stop the illegal immigration first, this plan is DOA and he is sinking the party, too.
I'm sure the president believes what he is doing is reasonable, but Americans are fed up.

Can't we just negotiate with Iran-let them keep any nukes they may aready have in the country? It'd be too much to expect them to get rid of them if they're already there.

Why won't he defend our borders?
He's violating his oath and I can no longer support him.
Just Damn!

What's there to discuss? Enforce the laws already on the books!
Bush is/has already lost many of his die hard supporters. All he needs to do is look at FNC to see what the views are voting to see more of and read FR posts. He is not the man I voted for.

He's sticking to House Republicans, trying to pressure them into caving once the Senate bill passes.
He's quite a Republican.

Bush could turn everything around---and I mean to the point of double-digit GOP victories in the fall---if he said six words.
"I was wrong" and "No, su puede."

Unfortunately, a mostly great President, instead of giving an address to the nation, needs to listen to an address of The People and why we won't go along with another Amnesty Program - it is a never ending saga of give away of our rights.

I think all the negative nabobs on this thread should shut their traps until they hear what the President has to say. The scuttlebutt is that the President has heard our complaints, and intends to propose that no worker program will be implemented until the borders are certified as secured.

"Key to the agreement is who will be negotiating a compromise with the House, which last December passed an enforcement-only bill that would subject the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to felony charges as well as deportation. "
What's going on? This passed LAST DECEMBER?
WHY isn't it being enforced NOW as well as the rest of our arsenal of LAWS that don't allow ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?
How many laws do we need?
ENFORCE THEM.
It's ILLEGAL to be here without proper paperwork. If they want to be citizens they can go through the LEGAL process just like the rest of us and our relatives did.

I wonder if this'll manage to drive GWB's approval ratings even lower if some number of Republicans who now associate amnesty with the Democrats realize that's what GWB also wants. The biggest irony here is that the 1/3 of voters who still support GWB are the most conservative, and so they're all but interchangable with the 1/3 of voters who most strongly oppose amnesty. The other 2/3 are hardly likely to switch to approval of GWB because of this, so all I see is downside from a political viewpoint.

I can see Tony's hand painted all over this... It's smart to address an issues like this instead of hiding under the bed. Way to go Tony!
However... please let the president know that "Immigration reform" begins with SECURING THE BORDER FIRST... Then we can consider the problem at hand This picture to "illustrate" the point :)
