WASHINGTON - President Bush plans to address the nation Monday night on the immigration debate, trying to build momentum for legislation that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens.
The White House said it was seeking time from television networks for the president's remarks.
"This is crunch time," Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary said Friday at his first off-camera, or informal, briefing.
On Thursday, Senate leaders reached a deal to revive a broad immigration bill that had appeared doomed just several weeks ago.
Key to the agreement is who will be negotiating a compromise with the House, which last December passed an enforcement-only bill that would subject the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to felony charges as well as deportation.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said the Senate will send 14 Republicans and 12 Democrats to negotiate with the House, with seven of the Republicans and five Democrats coming from the Judiciary Committee. The remaining seven Republicans will be chosen by Frist and remaining seven Democrats chosen by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
It is such a great cartoon. You can't fix the boat until u fix the leak.
If he had put this much passion into reforming soc sec, there would have been some positive change by now.
Somebody at the WH just doesn't know how to pick and/or sell issues.
Bush's best bet on illegals, if he can't go along with his base, is to keep a low profile not shove it in our faces.
Do you like this one?
I admittedly do not love this man. I don't hate him, but some of his decisions have me perplexed. Yes, I did vote for him twice, but those votes were more "against" the other guy.
I'm not doing that anymore.
5 years too late...whatever he has to say...
They fell to 29% in the Harris poll yesterday. They must have fallen more in the GOP poll(one that we will never see). They may fall again on Tuesday, May 16, if he thinks he can give away the farm by being compassionate with our money and our borders.
I notice he has quit saying "jobs that Americans won't do". I wonder what his spin will be now. As soon as I hear one Spanish word, I will turn it off.
"I notice he has quit saying "jobs that Americans won't do".
Care to make a bet on this phrase being repeated on Monday?
Mr President: As a humble citizen who enthusiastically voted for you in 2004 and who supports wholeheartedly your actions in Iraq and your fight in the War on Terror, may I make some humble suggestions for your speech Monday night:
1. Please DO NOT under any circumstances repeat that incredibly insulting and incorrect line that "the ILLEGAL Immigrants are doing jobs that AMERICANS REFUSE TO DO...".
This is one of the biggest turn-offs to your conservative base and an insult to present and past generations of LEGAL American immigrants who DID DO and continue to do "those" jobs
2. Make it clear your NUMBER ONE priority is to patrol and control the Border. Period. Say that this must be accomplished before ANY consideration is given to the illegals already here.
3. Make sure you educate the American people about the difference between ILLEGAL immigration and LEGAL immigration. Use the bully pulpit to frame the issue: this is not about being anti-immigrant or pro-immigrant, but about the ILLEGALITY of people sneaking across the border with no control. We have a LEGAL process to allow immigrants in; that should be paramount. The issue is not Americans picking on immigrants or whether we need new immigrants in the US: the issue is GETTING INTO THE COUNTRY LEGALLY vs ILLEGALLY.
4. IF you propose a guest worker program for current illegals, make sure you address the thousands of foreigners who are currently going thru the LEGAL PROCESS to become LEGAL Citizens, and explain to them why their efforts have been largely WASTED as a result of your AMNESTY program for lawbreakers and border crossers.
5. Make sure you note that businesses can no longer shut out LEGAL American citizens and encourage lawbreaking in order to pay workers below minimum wage. Legal citizens should ALWAYS get priority over illegals (criminals) and if businesses dont like it tell them THEY have to obey the law too.
6. DO NOT simply rehash all the old speeches you have made about how illegals are the lifeblood of America, we are a nation of immigrants, how your amnesty program is really not amnesty. If you just rehash your muddled and ridiculous speeches of the past, I will politely but firmly turn the set off.
Best of luck, Mr. President
No, he's a silver spoon baby. How would he know what the average American does to get by?
Very nice! :)
Bingo!
DING-DING-DING!! Getcher Post of the Day right here, folks!
And how many of those illegals rounded up by ICE are released with a notice to appear in court due to a lack of detention beds?
How many actually show up-only 10%.
There is probably no one more anti-illegal immigrant than me on this site, but I do respect Bush. I just disagree with him on this immigration issue. Anyone can review any and every post I've made and they will not find a single time I've bad-mouthed or denegrated Bush. I've not made derogatory posts to others either.
I don't believe Bush has ulterior motives or is caved in to big business on this issue. I think he is just compassionate towards the illegals and doesn't see them as big of a problem as I do.
I understand, however, the frustration, angst and anger of many here who feel helpless with Bush and congress on this matter. I hope those who have differing opinions here can post reasonable and constructive comments without being attacked just for being of a different opinion. If I post something stupid or inflamatory, which I haven't, then by all means, turn on the flamethrowers.
Not everybody who agrees with the president is a BushBot or a FROBL and not everybody who disagrees is is a Pat Buchanan supporter.
I stand with Pukin Dog on this point.
If you read my posts, although critical of the President, you will find that I almost always call him President Bush or George W. Bush. He is still my Commander-in-Chief and he still is owed the respect that comes with his position. And despite his failings on immigration and border security (and spending, etc), he is still a great President and is prosecuting the War on Terror in a manner that is laudable.
Well, of course, as I indicated with the phrase "if he can't go along with his base", I prefer that he reverse himself totally.
But he is NOT going to do that. He never changes his position. So failing that the best course he could take is to SHUT UP!
No,I don't think will make a bet on it. LOL!!!
Anything less than declaring a national border emegency, deploying troops on the border or calling citizen help)like the minutemen) won't go very far.
A promise to spend more money, etc will be met with digust.
