WASHINGTON The Pentagon is looking at ways the military can help provide more security along the U.S. southern border, defense officials said Thursday, once again drawing the nation's armed forces into a politically sensitive domestic role.
On Capitol Hill on Thursday, the House voted 252-171 to allow Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to assign military personnel under certain circumstances to help the Homeland Security Department perform border security. The House added the provision to a larger military measure.
Paul McHale, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, asked officials this week to come up with options for the use of military resources and troops particularly the National Guard along the border with Mexico, according to defense officials familiar with the discussions. The officials, who requested anonymity because the matter has not been made public, said there are no details yet on a defense strategy.
The request comes as some Southern lawmakers met this week with White House strategist Karl Rove for a discussion that included making greater use of National Guard troops to shore up border control. Congress is

I will apologize, but don't call me girl. Please understand how tedious all this self-important posturing is, especially first thing in the morning.
FoxNews reported that Bush asked Rummy to find a Constitutional way to do this. If the Prez did NOT want it done, it would NOT be done. BTW, Bush is CIC, NOT the House!

You should have seen the 'bots rush in with threats of banning when I posited that scenario a few weeks ago. The grand irony is that with a Dem majority, he will be impeached not over immigration, but over what conservatives generally support ie the WoT.
Either way, the effect is the same.
It is sad. "Black Cloud" Conservatives!

I am ONE OF YOU, NOT one of THEM! Patriots KNOW who "THEY" are!

If you actually read posse comitatus, I don't see how any interpretation could lead to anything but....the founders wanted to insure that the military was not used against U.S. citizens.
It says that the military cannot be used within the borders unless it is for a Constitutional purpose. Defending our borders from an invasion is definitely Constitutional and the President's job first and foremost.
Of course every lib lawyer out there would argue otherwise.
It's not posturing on my part, I'm dead serious about Bush saving himself and the GOP, and the Illegal Immigration issue is killing us.
Good news, President Bush is going to address the Nation at 8pm Eastern Time on Illegal Immigration!

yeah but you can be sure that his speech will include "guest worker program", "jobs that Americans won't do", etc.
That tells me he is still insincere regardless of what show he puts on.
Massive interior enforcement is the key not amnesty.
It's a start, but there is still a lot to be done.
This speech has all the markings of the new Tony Snow initiatives. Unfortunately, as evidenced on these Freeper threads, Tony Snow is even more invested in the amnesty pitch than George Bush.
As a result, don't expect any change of heart in this speech, just the usual oozing-with-compassion nonsense about family-value (illegal) immigrants and work Americans won't do.
One word wou wont't hear is "amnesty" unless it is cloaked in a phrase like "this is not amnesty".
The "Earthquake McGoons" of the Republican Party.
In Mexico, if you jay walk, and then if you run from a cop, it is considered an automatic admission of guilt, and that Mexican cop WILL put a .45 bullet right in your X-ring. No hesitation, no recourse, no repercussions for the cop. It's called the Law of Flight. Do you want Mexican law here? One of the nice things about a bullet is that it is no respecter of race, creed, color, age, national origin or sexual preference.
"The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer".
Henry Kissinger, New York Times, Oct. 28, 1973
I don't think we should give illegals the death penalty, if that is what you are asking.
twety years too late...horse...barn...
well lets just see how many troops are actually deployed to the borders
ping
And what about TONY SNOW, he knows oh too well how folks are feeling about border security and all these bleeping illegals?
Moreover, assigning combat units to this non-combat role would be ill-advised. After the Bosnia adventure, the participating combat units had to relearn their trade craft all over again.
