House Permits Pentagon to Assign U.S. Military Along Mexican Border

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is looking at ways the military can help provide more security along the U.S. southern border, defense officials said Thursday, once again drawing the nation's armed forces into a politically sensitive domestic role.

On Capitol Hill on Thursday, the House voted 252-171 to allow Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to assign military personnel under certain circumstances to help the Homeland Security Department perform border security. The House added the provision to a larger military measure.

Paul McHale, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, asked officials this week to come up with options for the use of military resources and troops — particularly the National Guard — along the border with Mexico, according to defense officials familiar with the discussions. The officials, who requested anonymity because the matter has not been made public, said there are no details yet on a defense strategy.

The request comes as some Southern lawmakers met this week with White House strategist Karl Rove for a discussion that included making greater use of National Guard troops to shore up border control. Congress is

So you believe those trying to cross the border should be shot? Women and children, too?

Well, it looks to me like the House voted on this. This is not a directive from Bush.

Last time I looked, the House of Representatives speaks for us, the governed.

WE wanted this. Maybe they heard.

Here's to believing in our county. Which, by the way I still do.

Right objective, wrong approach.

This is all show. First, you can't just assign the National Guard to patrol the borders as a permanent solution. These troops are not full-time military just waiting around in some barracks for their next assignment. They are civilians just like you, with jobs and home life who are called upon only when needed, for relatively short duration, or if mobilized, "for the duration." The ranks of the National Guard will soon be emptied if you start using them as a full time Border Patrol. Then what?

Next, Congress has to do a lot of legislating to leaglize the Guard as a federal force. When used for federal roles, Posse Comitatus applies and there is not much the Guard can do without violating the law.

The author of this story also shows his ignorance of the Guard in describing Gov Janet Napolitan's deceitful request for National Guard troops on the Arizona border. The Guard does not belong to the Feds, but to the Governors like her. She could call out the entire Arizona National Guard this afternoon if she wished. Instead, she called up 170 troops for a phony photo op, and now uses those 170 NOT to patrol the border, but to fix vehicles and computers at the Border Patrol offices.

How many of those 170 guys pulled away from their civilian jobs for crap work do you think are going to re-enlist?

Good news?! Don't get your hopes up guys. This is just another sham by the politicoes to make you think they are doing something while avoiding the problem. Both parties are equally guilty, but the Republicans are in charge and will pay the price come November.

Just hope the MSM is not there. Can you imagine our troops trying to secure law and order and being made the criminals? It will happen.

By handing over the reins of government to the democrats.

Yeah - that will really make things better!

You jack**s! The president is the one who has brought this issue foreward. It is the jellyfish in California who can't do anything but whine and demand someone else do their work for them. They are the ones who think they are entitled to cheap domestic help and treated us to protests in their streets. Do you see them doing anything after 650 bills are proposed in legislatures across the country. No, they demand service, by golly. They're entitled. Oh yes they passed an initiative 10 years ago and got buffaloed by a judge.

President Bush has been very weak regarding Illegal Immigration

I'm sometimes amazed by the naivete I see expressed on this board. Bush is not weak on illegal immigration - his administration OPENLY aids and abets illegal immigration.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of existing laws, rules & regulations under his direct executive control pertaining to resident status. Ranging from the IRS, SS Admin, SEC, FDIC, et al, they are all complicit in making it easier for employers, lenders, insurers, governments, etc to provide jobs, goods & services to illegal aliens.

This could stop tomorrow, not by passage of any new laws, nor the issuance of EOs, but by simply following EXISTING law. If the person responsible for such actions is openly violating these provisions, what recourse do Americans have?

But, remember, the Republicans in the House of late have only acted when President Bush stiffened their collective spines with a well-placed boot up their collective butts!

Can someone answer a question for me? Why are we not allowed to patrol our land borders with troops due to posse comutas(sp) yet allowed to patrol our air borders with military jets?

"REPORT ON A MINUTEMAN TODAY-MIGRANTS RIGHTS FIRST!"

"Hope you're being facetious instead of uninformed."

I'm very informed, and though usually tongue-in-cheek, not this time.

Those Trade agreements are more than words. They are the fount of governmental policy for the next decades or so, have nothing to do with the direction that the majority wishes, and will be promulgated in every event.

Speaking of informed, have you read the agreements?

Prediction: Troops on border will disperse the MM. If they don't disperse, then they will run up against the US government for interferring with the military.

In any event, they have to silence the screams of protest, appear to be doing something, and get those citizens off the border.
