As one of Stanford University's most respected Middle East scholars, professor Joel Beinin knows what terrorism looks like.
So it was a shock when he saw his own face on the cover of a new book titled ``Campus Support for Terrorism,'' linking him to radical Islam.
He's suing the book's publishers in what is the first counteroffensive by a professor against a growing campaign by conservative groups targeting left-leaning college educators.
Conservative groups acknowledge they are watching scholars like Beinin in an effort to combat what they believe are inaccuracies perpetuated by liberal faculties on college campuses. But while many of the monitored faculty have stayed silent -- SNIP -- Beinin hired an attorney.
``They have used my picture as part of their war on free expression,'' Beinin said. ``I have never, in any way, supported terrorism. I've spoken out against it. They're trying to intimidate people into silence.''
David Horowitz, publisher of the book that is the subject of Beinin's complaint, says he is simply exercising his right to free speech and considers the suit harassment.
``I didn't say he was a terrorist. I said he supported terrorism,'' said Horowitz, president of the Los Angeles-based Center for the Study of Popular Culture. ``It is my view. If he doesn't like it, he can respond anytime he wants, instead of playing legal games.''
Horowitz and other leading conservatives seek to combat what they believe is the ``radicalization'' of Mideast studies by liberal-dominated faculties at the nation's universities.
Stanford is among 18 campuses targeted as having ``anti-Israel bias'' by the watchdog organization ``Campus Watch.'' ``Stanford students are getting a very poor interpretation of the Middle East, an extremist viewpoint that doesn't tolerate other viewpoints,'' wrote Campus Watch founder Daniel Pipes.

Campus Watch / David Horowitz fyi
If this guy was smart, he'd buy up as many copies of the book as cheap as he can, and autograph them for resale with a substantial markup... and include a pamphlet in his defense, complete with a set of double sided tape so people can attach the pamphlet to the inside of the book.
As it is, he's just going to write a book about how he was targeted by the VRWC.
And he's using a lawyer as part of his.
Hat off to Horowitz and Pipes..
From the Inside Flap
Coming to a Campus Near You: Terrorists, racists, and communists you know them as The Professors. We all know that left-wing radicals from the 1960s have hung around academia and hired people like themselves. But if you thought they were all harmless, antiquated hippies, you'd be wrong. Today's radical academics aren't the exceptionthey're legion. And far from being harmless, they spew violent anti-Americanism, preach anti-Semitism, and cheer on the killing of American soldiers and civiliansall the while collecting tax dollars and tuition fees to indoctrinate our children.
Remember Ward Churchill, the University of Colorado professor who compared the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks to Nazis who deserved what they got? You thought he was bad? In this shocking new book, New York Times bestselling author David Horowitz has news for you: American universities are full of radical academics like Ward Churchilland worse.
Horowitz exposes 101 academicsrepresentative of thousands of radicals who teach our young peoplewho also happen to be alleged ex-terrorists, racists, murderers, sexual deviants, anti-Semites, and al-Qaeda supporters. Horowitz blows the cover on academics who: Say they want to kill white people. Promote the views of the Iranian mullahs. Support Osama bin Laden. Lament the demise of the Soviet Union. Defend pedophilia. Advocate the killing of ordinary Americans.
David Horowitz's riveting exposé is essential reading for parents, students, college alums, taxpayers, and patriotic Americans who don't think college students should be indoctrinated by sympathizers of Joseph Stalin and Osama bin Laden.
The Professors is truly frighteningand an intellectual call to arms from a courageous author who knows the radicals all too well.
Ditto that. I put in a comment at the mercury news site, btw.
The Communist radical Left are mighty afraid of Horowitz because he understands perfectally how they operate to fool academia into thinking they are socially conscious. He was once part of the Left before he grew up intellectually. The radical Lefty are power hungry Fascists, who themselves stifle any point of view but their own. Horowitz has done his homework, so the groups that want to bring down America are busy as beavers passing resolutions against Horowitz and trying to discredit him. They know better than anyone that he's got their number. David Horowitz fights for a free America and should be supported wholeheartedly. He is a freedom of speech hero.
I don't support terrorists.
I just think Hamas and al Quada are getting a raw deal. I think the US deserved 9-11. I think terrorists should get trials by jury in the US. I think our military personnel deserve to be shot. I think it's all our fault that terrorists hate us. I think we should pursue diplomatic channels with people who say they're at war with us and want us eliminated.
Meanwhile to even suggest that illegal immigrants follow our laws makes you a racist. To suggest that young children need a mother *and* a father makes you an insensitive homophobe. To not be in favor of Kyoto makes you a greedy company man. To even utter the word "god" makes you an untrustworthy religious zealot.
Here is one of the comments on the site following the article:
I hope all you conservatist christian fundamentalists get to live through what the Palestinians live through. Since thats not likely, I hope you all just get blown up :)

Gosh, tough titty when the shoe is on the other foot. Go ask Rush or Bill OReilly how they liked being put on the cover of an Alfranken book just so that vermin could sell more copies.
I think it's great! Joel Beinin will find it's hard to spin in a court of law. Reminds me of John Dean who sued G. Gordon Liddy and then realized his mistake but Liddy wouldn't let him withdraw and ate his lunch in court.
As far as I can tell Horowitz is right about this lefty bastard:
