Hard Core Republicans Are Fleeing President
The Washington Post ^ | May 11, 2006 | JIm VandeHei and Peter Baker

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks, sending Bush's approval ratings to record lows and presenting a new threat to the GOP's 12-year reign on Capitol Hill, according to White House officials, lawmakers and new polling data.

Bush and Congress have suffered a decline in support from almost every part of the conservative coalition over the past year, a trend that has accelerated with alarming implications for Bush's governing strategy.

The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and an abandonment of core conservative principles more generally.

There are also significant pockets of conservatives turning on Bush and Congress over the their failure to tighten immigration laws, restrict gay marriage and to put an end to the Iraq war and the rash of political scandals, according to lawmakers and pollsters.

Bush won two presidential elections by pursuing a political and governing model that was predicated on winning and sustaining the loyal backing of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives. The strategy was based on the belief that conservatives, who are often more politically active than the general public, could be inspired to vote in larger numbers and would serve as a reliable foundation for his presidency. The theory, as explained by Bush strategists, is that the president would enjoy a floor below which his support would never fall.

It is now apparent that this floor has weakened dramatically and collapsed in places.

Now is a golden opportunity for an Independent to make it to the top.

Good bye!

Someone told me last night if we had a thread about our favorite chocolate chip cookies, they'd hit that thread too. LOL

It's helped somewhat that these posts have been made recently, however:

This is a thread about Mr. Snow. Unless you can stay on topic, stay off this thread. And the same goes for everybody else. We will start suspending anybody and everybody who addresses Illegal Immigration where it is irrelevant.
Keep On Topic!

Attention:

Those of you who are calling for revolution, secession, violence, impeachment, etc, will no longer be posting on FR. Sheesh, it's a phony report (pure Marxist propaganda), but it sure is exposing a lot of hothead idiot trolls.

It took more than a century to get to where (low point morally and socially) we are...nobody - not even Dubya - can turn it around in 2 terms.

I for one think it's gone on way too long. And I'm a conservative and a Vet.

Are you saying we should just leave? At what point did it become "too long"?

And all of those republicans just know the dims will do better.

If any think we will have any kind of country left with dims in charge ---- I hate it for my grandchildren. At my age, I will fight for them.

We still need some good judges. The dims do so well with those.

We still need to make the tax cuts permanent. I am sure the dims agree.

If the "die-hards" (tulips) want to get something done about _____ (fill in the blank with your pet issue), then they should stop sending RINO's to D.C.

If you're ticked about spending, who controls the purse strings? If the RINOs tack on earmarks to a bill (like military pay that they know will be passed) who's really responsible for the pork (bridge to nowhere, anyone)?

Immigration....while securing the border is one immediate needed step, states need to stop giving illegals incentives for violation of the law (bank loans, housing, jobs, education, healthcare). States should have fed funding pulled when they pull a political stunt to attract illegals (just for votes).

No more BIG TENT PC bull...all you get are clowns and circus freaks. "Besides, Who wants to shovel all this $hit when the circus leaves town?" (Thanks, Cheapskate!)

Purge the party of RINOs in the primaries and send hard-core conservatives to Washington. It's that simple.

The media read websites like FR, and they can see all the talk of staying home, supporting Democrats, supporting third parties, favoring impeachment. The Post and others are in full scale reinforcement of conservative discouragement: "It's no use voting. Bush is at 31%, he can never recover, Republicans are turning on each other." It's about voter suppression now, and it's working. On FR, the bitching and bellyaching is ongoing from the Donner party. After the election, if the Dems are elected to the House, the bitching and bellyaching will continue. These people have NEVER been happy with Bush and the Republicans in Congress, and they never will be.

Please allow me the honor of echoing your comment with a cut, paste and click.

If the Rats take over, I'll remember that you voted for them, either directly or indirectly.

OMG, take your meds scooter. That's the most ridiculous thing I've seen. Random threats don't scare me and they obviously don't scare alot of others who are walking off the plantation.

I want to support the President, but I'm losing sight of where he is leading us.

This President is a man of tremendous character and of quiet resolve. Traits that are sorely lacking among most men anymore today. Traits that are no longer admired...and yet mocked. This President has dealt with a great many issues and done very well by this Country on the whole. Sure there are some issues that haven't gone exactly like all of us on the right would like....That's life!...pick any Administration in our history...and that will have been the case.

Furthermore this CIC is leading not our great nation...America, but he is leading the world in the WOT.

The GOP base cannot allow the ilk of the anti-military, anti-America, anti-success of the WOT Democrats to hold a majority in Congress. Not while we have soldiers off fighting on distance shores. We cannot stick a knife in their back like that....(over domestic policy differences)...

No there are plenty of times to step away from one's party....but this is certainly not one of those times! This is a time to stand shoulder to shoulder with our CIC and soldiers in the field and let the democrats know come hell or high water we are going to defeat you.

08 is the time for this fight - in the primaries -

"We got the 1994 Republican revolution. But what has that gotten us? "

Welfare Reform that was the best conservative public policy in the last generation.

What have we gotten in the last year?
- Sam Alito, Chief Justice John Roberts
- Energy Bill that lets us build nuclear power plants
- Tax cuts extensions (vote this week)

"All of the Republicans that had any fire in their belly have left."

Mike Pence, Tom Coburn ... the beat goes on.

And the Minutemen are, I suppose, "vigilantes"?

LOL. They are fence builders the last I heard. They stared in Crawford last weekend but their pal Cindy wouldn't get out of the ditch.

Jim Robinson wrote the foreward for a book called Hillary's Secret War. Free Republic is mentioned prominently in the book.

It details how leftists come to sites like this one, sign up, post as conservatives for a while to establish their credentials, and then, when they see an opportunity, start to turn the conservative base against Republicans.

Jim Robinson was able to follow where posters were coming from and in the 90's, lots and lots of posters were pretending to be conservatives but were actually posting from the Clinton White House and Washington Post, etc.

Top priority is keeping more illegals from getting in, lower priority is throwing the ones already in out or converting them to legals.

That's just not enough for the Wrist Slitter Wing of the GOP; they want it NOW, damnit.

Also from the link.

Granting amnesty would be unfair because it would allow those who break the law to jump ahead of people who play by the rules and wait in the citizenship line. Amnesty would also encourage future waves of illegal immigration, increase pressure on the border, and make it more difficult for law enforcement to focus on those who mean us harm. For the sake of justice and the sake of border security, the President firmly opposes amnesty.

Looked at it and see this:

Since President Bush took office, agents have apprehended and sent home more than 6 million people entering the country illegally - including more than 400,000 with criminal records. Federal, State, local, and tribal law enforcement are working together. More than 600,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended through the Arizona Border Control Initiative last year.

If 600,000 were captured in Arizona, how many made it through?! What is the percent apprehended? And what percent caught had been apprehended one or more times previously?

No matter the answers to the math questions, the answer to the actual problem is a wall, not high tech gadgets that won't work in an Arizona dust storm, or subject to lightning strikes in summer, or power failure by a coyote who knows how to sabotage the system. It's obvious, obvious, obvious to all but those who won't see.
