I don't see how someone can be a Christian and a liberal at the same time.

If Jesus were alive today, 99.99% of FReepers would label him a "liberal". He spoke of equality, love, compassion, tolerance, and peace.

I missed the parts where he talked about equality and tolerance. Where are those parts?

Not that equality and tolerance are not fine ideals. I just find it odd that some people seem to think that every fine ideal can be ascribed to a statement of Christ.

"He spoke of equality, love, compassion, tolerance, and peace."

Last time I checked, Conservatives were for all of that as well.

But equality does not mean special rights. it means equality.

And sometimes the most love you can show someone is discipline.

And Compassion and Tolerance do not mean acceptance and celebration of sin. (He said "Go and sin no more." People always forget that.)

Jesus of the Bible (as opposed to say, Godspell) was not a hippy. He was (is!) pretty much a hardass.

I'm not liberal, and I believe in those things: equality of opportunity & equality under the law, voluntary compassion toward my neighbors in need, tolerance of diverse opinions, and peace through reasonable deterrence.

Liberals have perverted those things to mean: collectivism (the erosion of private property rights), enforced "compassion" to subsidize laziness, acceptance of sinful actions (all while practicing intolerance of divergent opinions), and weakness.

"He spoke of equality, love, compassion, tolerance, and peace."

Jesus also spoke to his followers telling them if "equality, love, compassion, tolerance, and peace" is not returned back to you then dust your sandals off because hell will be waiting for them.

Also Jesus' said His second trip to earth will be a hell of a lot different than His first.

Moral of the story, believe in the Father, love others, and repent (From what, oh yes sin/evil). If not, Jesus will be one frightening Judge and Executioner.

Mathew 10: 5-16

"Jesus came to Galilee saying...'Repent, and believe in the gospel.'" Mark 1:15

"...Jesus began...to say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'" Matthew 4:17

"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." James 4:6

Andrew's problem is not with Christianism, it is with Jesus Christ.

Jesus commanded repentance.

None of us, Andrew included, is capable of truly repenting through our own works, but perhaps one day through God's grace, Andrew will receive the strength to repent and the forgiveness of his sins.

Equality: We could all be equally enslaved to the state under the boot of an atheistic communist system. Not sure Jesus would prefer that to freedom where people are free to develop their full potential and grow spiritually. Although personally I try to treat (good, decent) people equally, I prefer freedom to equality.

Love: Not sure there's anyone that at least has most of his/her marbles intact who's against that.

Compassion: True personal compassion, yes. However, Great Society-style liberal government "compassion" has nearly destroyed the lower class, torn families apart, stunted self-reliance & personal development, and fostered dependence on the state.

Tolerance: Tolerate what? You mean like tolerate "cultural diversity"? Like other cultures who treat women as chattel (or worse... much worse)? After all, it's just another culture whose values are just as valid as ours?

Peace: True peace, yes. But if you mean Jesus would advocate withdrwal from Iraq, that's not peace, that's Cambodia all over again, stacks of skulls and all.

I believe in those things, and I'm a Christian Conservative. While libs have hijacked and perverted those values to fit their own twisted agenda, they are still values Conservatives aspire to.

As for Jesus being a 'liberal', I think he would have some reservations associating himself with those who wholeheartedly support abortion and gay rights.

That's baloney, you imply conservatives believe in inequality, hate, uncompassion, intolerance and war!

I don't see any evidence Jesus preach for equality in a communist sense. Since conservatives are more fecund and charitable, I don't see a shortage of love on our side. As far as compassion goes, welfare is NOT a compassionate system, it strips humans of humanity. As far as intolerance, there is no evidence Jesus was tolerant of sinners, though he was forgiving. And I don't think Jesus would believe in leaving Saddam Hussein in power.

So, all in all, you stand refuted.

No we wouldn't, but then my view of Jesus comes from the Westboro Baptist Church. ;^)

And exactly how are these contrary to conservatism? They're at the heart of conservatism. It's liberals who betray the ideals of equality, love, compassion, tolerance, and peace. Time and time again.

By the way, Jesus was also big on intolerance. Tolerating evil, after all, isn't tolerance, it's just apathy.

Jesus dared to say that no one could come to the Father but through HIM. He also called religious leaders of the day "slimy snakes," smacked people around in the temple, told some it would be better for them on the day of judgment if they had millstones wrapped around their necks and were tossed into a lake, talked about evil, called some "dogs," and so on. But I suspect you know all this.

The difference is Jesus did more than just talk.

Liberals are all about feeling good by throwing money they take from the evil Republicans, who as the employers pay most of the taxes, and throwing it at the cause du jour.

He also spoke of sin and judgement.

Jesus knew the human heart better than anyone. He had no illusions as to what was necessary to govern men.

Shalom.
