Gingrich: GOP can stop House loss By David M. Brown TRIBUNE-REVIEW

"Will they win? I think that's still up to the Republicans," Gingrich said Tuesday in a meeting with reporters and editors of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Gingrich is an idea guy. His ill-fated four years as House Speaker ought to convince you that he has few tactical leadership skills.

Oh my goodness! If you had a shred of credibility on this issue, you just lost it.

Gingrich is the architect of the Contract with America. If there was no Contract with America we would likely still have a Democrat majority in Congress. I'm not all that fond of Gingrich, and in fact I complained a lot about him when he was Speaker (mostly because he was backing down on too much of the Contract). But you have to give credit where credit is due. Just because you don't like what Gingrich had to say doesn't mean you have to trash him just like all the FReepers you and the harpies have been trashing whenever one may dare say the same kind of things Mehlman and Gingrich have been saying lately.

Tactical leadership skills? Beyond spewing vitriol and smears at complaining conservatives on this conservative forum, alienating them by the dozens, what other impressive tactical leadership skills have you demonstrated relative to Newt Gingrich's?

The blind bush bots have gotten me half convinced going to the polls in Nov are a waste of time. I voted for W twice and his old man before that and Tom Delay.

The GOP left my congressman out to dry and now they pander to the illegals instead of taxpaying US citizens.

Gingrich is the architect of the Contract with America.

As I said, Newt is an ideas guy. He continues to prove that with his insights into present-day political realities.

what other impressive tactical leadership skills have you demonstrated relative to Newt Gingrich's?

As is your wont, you devolve into ad hominems that have nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

You admit that Gingrich has no tactical leadership skills. Thank you.

I made no ad hominems. I asked you a question about your tactical leadership skills. Ironic that you would accuse me of ad hominem attacks given the days worth of ad hominem crap from you and the harpies.

Since I am not being suggested as a candidate for president, my tactical leadership skills are not the issue.

Newt's are, and he has few, which is why he would be a bad choice for the GOP.

Maybe these clowns will be able to balance a budget, the Republicans obviously can't.

I'll take Newt's advice for Republicans to run as conservatives over Dicky Morris' advice that they run as Democrats.

Republicans who run as liberals LOSE. Republicans only win in at the polls or as legislators when they run as conservatives.

We've won against the odds before with Reagan and Gingrich. Let's stick to the only formula that actually works.

Is he running for President? You attacked what he said, as quoted in this article, based upon your opinion of his tactical leadership skills. What's the President stuff? Changing the subject?

That was my original post. I attacked nothing of what Gingrich said.

You need to get a grip.

Arnold Stang has a better chance of winning the nomination or the White House than Newt.

Yep, that looks pretty bad, doesn't it.

So, it's time for all of the fury, anger and hate in the Republican Party in America at the thought of those Dems running the Congress to be focused like a white hot laser beam on about 10 Republican Senators who insist on amnesty and won't vote for a border fence, stand them up in front of an open grave, and make their recalcitrance the reason that all of those terrible people will take over.

Enough of those ten Republican Senators need to be beaten into submission so that the Border Conservatives don't stay home/vote third party, etc.

Fence the border THIS year.
Talk about amnesty NEXT year.
That is ALL IT WILL TAKE to swing the conservatives into the voting booth for Republicans this fall. They will have something to PROTECT: the new Fence.

Ten Republican Senators are going to give us that Congress you've shown us pictures of. They're going to give us an impeachment of Bush, a loss in Iraq and higher taxes. They need to be the targets of the entire Republican movement. They need to be compelled to change their votes or ejected from the party caucus that they are going to destroy anyway.

"However, it is May. Primaries are in September and the General Election is in November. It is likely far too late to do much of anything substantial to patch things up with conservatives."

I disagree.
They could STOP talking about amnesty this year.
They could PASS and FUND a border fence this year, which Bush could immediately sign, and the fence could start going up. And then the Bush Administration could step up border enforcement and report all the new interceptions even as the fence goes up.

That will snap the Republican ship right around on a good tack, the sails will stop luffing and will fill with the vigorous support of the border conservatives who will have won the biggest two things on their agenda, they will have something to DEFEND now, and will rush to defend the Republicans this November.

There is time, and there is a clear pair of things they have to do.

That will win the election.
Anything else, and I do mean ANYTHING else, and the Democrats win.
There is no margin to maneuver here now, and there's precious little time left on the clock.

It's time for the GOP to pull the requisite number of obstructionist Senators into the back office and tell them that they will vote for a fence now, or they will be thrown out of the Republican caucus which they are destroying by refusing to give a fence.

It is necessary. And there is still time.

It really is that simple.

If we evaluate what can be done with the threat of a filibuster there are three items that Republicans can show good faith and pass now.

Provided it holds, the budget is "said" to be unable to be filibustered. So round out the Republicans, enforce discipline, include ANWR, and pass spending cuts.

Right there you take care of fiscal conservatives and do something substantial to address gas prices.

break the filibuster and confirm the judges. Social conservatives and social Indy's/Dems back onboard.

Then make border enforcement the centerpiece of the '06 elections. If Dems/RINO's balk at it, make them balk at it in an election year. Concentrate on nothing else but passage of a fence, employer penalties for those hiring illegals and allowing the Border Control to do its job rather than catch and release.

My guess is that enough Democrats will back down to make this reality nearer the elections and pass the bill.

But enforcement is at the heart of all of these proposals. It is depressing the attitudes of the Majority. Acting on spending, Judges, ANWR will not resolve the deep anger over this issue and appreciation will be restrained about the rest should they act on them.

Maybe these clowns will be able to balance a budget, the Republicans obviously can't.

If you feel higher taxes and greater social "investment" is the way to a balanced budget, the choice is clear.
