May 9, 2006 -- A New Jersey man was charged with assault yesterday for beating an opponent on a Newark golf course - with his No. 5 and No. 6 irons.
"Apparently things became a little heated on the 12th hole," Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said of the Sunday morning foursome that turned fearsome.
He said Therlow Roberts, 48, of West Orange and frequent golfing buddy Dwayne McCray, 40, of Orange got into an angry dispute over whether a shot had landed in or out of bounds.

Well, every golfer knows that you're in trouble if you can't decide between clubs. There's just no good that can come of it.
The 6 iron is a bit heavier. And the shorter length helps with hitting the target. But then again, you can generate just a bit more clubhead speed with the 5. So maybe he started with the 5 to stun and then used the 6 to finish the job.

This story reminds me of an old Woody Woodbury joke:
1st man:Hey, Joe just beat his wife to death with a golf club
2nd Man: How many strokes did it take?
To: Henchster
Yes, but the sand wedge can be one of the most difficult shots. And what if he uses the 3 wedge system; which do you use? Many of us feel more confortable with a full swing with a middle to short iron. It requires less "touch", and I suspect that our golfer wasn't looking for a finesse shot.

[5 and 6 iron? What a dumbass. He should have taken just the sand wedge, it's the heaviest club in the bag. And it has to have a steel shaft, those whippy graphite twigs just shatter when you try to thump someone with them.]
That's why I play hockey. When you hit someone with a hockey stick it actually teaches them a lesson. And you don't get arrested for hitting someone with a hockey stick, you only spend two minutes in the penalty box (five, if you draw blood).

McCray, the victim said "I am on pain medication and my head hurts" That sounds just like me after my semi- annual golf outings.

Perhaps he can pull a Judge Smails;and blame the incident on his caddy. The grips really were worn smooth and should have been replaced.

It's an accepted technique. A free shot is called a Mulligan, this is called a Skakel.
To: Tijeras_Slim
this is called a Skakel. Bada Bing! He'll be here all week folks..tip your waitress...try the veal.
Seriously though I would think one of those massive putters would have been a more efficient club selection for the job. Especially if they were on the green.
Now if they were still in the fairway I would go more with a hybrid fairway metal, but that's just me.
