May 9, 2006 -- A New Jersey man was charged with assault yesterday for beating an opponent on a Newark golf course - with his No. 5 and No. 6 irons.

"Apparently things became a little heated on the 12th hole," Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said of the Sunday morning foursome that turned fearsome.

He said Therlow Roberts, 48, of West Orange and frequent golfing buddy Dwayne McCray, 40, of Orange got into an angry dispute over whether a shot had landed in or out of bounds.

Silly competitiveness gets out of hand.

I wonder how much they usually bet on their games.

Must have been building up. Gamesmanship can get to you. Especially if you've been loosing money to the hustler for awhile.

A 5 and 6 iron will beat a "foot wedgie" anytime.

When McCray started to walk away, an enraged Roberts - who has a long arrest record - reached into his handcart, pulled out two steel-shafted irons and attacked his retreating rival from behind, witnesses said.

[snip]

He has been busted 37 times on charges that include aggravated assault and failure to pay support, sources said.

Just dayum.

Really now, these guys must be hacks. A five and six iron?

Everyone knows a set of titanium woods is the best for beating the h*** out of your golf buddies.

Well, every golfer knows that you're in trouble if you can't decide between clubs. There's just no good that can come of it.

Busted 37 times? That may mean the guys got a real problem and shouldn't be on the outside.

He has been busted 37 times....

It sounds as if he may have been a displaced New Orleans golfer.

There are few things funnier than an angry Adam Sandler screaming at a golf ball.

It must have been tough to judge the size of his head ...... thus the problem of being in between clubs. I guess he was short with the 6, decided to take a mulligan, and went for the green with the 5.

Virginia: What's this about you breaking a rake and throwing it in the woods?

Happy Gilmore: I didn't *break* it, I was merely testing its durability, and I *placed* it in the woods cause it's made of wood and I thought he should be with his family.

I believe the penalty for using two clubs on the same shot is 2 strokes.

5 and 6 iron? What a dumbass. He should have taken just the sand wedge, it's the heaviest club in the bag. And it has to have a steel shaft, those whippy graphite twigs just shatter when you try to thump someone with them.
