Hillary Meter: Support Down for Former First Lady (a twice monthly measure)
Rasmussen ^ | May 3, 2006 | Rasmussen

May 3, 2006--For the second straight Hillary Meter poll, just 26% of Americans say they will definitely vote for Senator Hillary Clinton if she runs for President in 2008. That matches the lowest level of support ever recorded for the former First Lady and is the seventh consecutive Hillary Meter poll showing her solid support below 30%.

The number who would definitely vote against Clinton in 2008 dropped back a couple of points in our latest survey to 39% (see trends).

Crosstabs are available for Premium Members.

Senator Clinton is now viewed as politically liberal by 44% of voters while 32% see her as politically moderate.

In January 2005, 51% saw Clinton as politically liberal. She moderated her image in the early part of last year, but the number seeing her as liberal has not consistently dipped below the 45% range.

Collectively, today’s Hillary Meter places Senator Clinton a net 52 points to the left of the nation's political center. Two weeks ago, she was 56 points to the left of center.

The political center is calculated by subtracting the number of liberals from the number of conservatives among the general public (35% conservative, 18% liberal for a net +17). For the Senator, 9% conservative minus 44% liberal equals a net minus 35. The minus 35 reading for Senator Clinton is 52 points away from the plus 17 reading for the general public.

Nationally, Clinton remains a polarizing figure--40% of Americans have a favorable opinion of her while 44% hold an unfavorable view.

The Hillary Meter is a twice monthly measure of Senator Hillary Clinton's effort to move to the political center. The next update is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, 2006. For as long as the former First Lady is a viable candidate for the White House, Rasmussen Reports will monitor public perceptions of her political ideology.

Rasmussen Reports is an electronic publishing firm specializing in the collection, publication, and distribution of public opinion polling information.

Visit our Election Polls page to see a summary of our latest state-by state polling. Rasmussen Reports is polling every Senate and Governors' race at least once a month this year. We also update the President's Job Approval on a daily basis.

Rasmussen Reports was the nation's most accurate polling firm during the Presidential election and the only one to project both Bush and Kerry's vote total within half a percentage point of the actual outcome.

During Election 2004, RasmussenReports.com was also the top-ranked public opinion research site on the web. We had twice as many visitors as our nearest competitor and nearly as many as all competitors combined.

Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports, has been an independent pollster for more than a decade.

This survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted by Rasmussen Reports April 17-18, 2006. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

That last 24% had BETTER be undecided.

Maybe they don't give a damn whether she's liberal or moderate; they wouldn't vote for her no matter what. I'm in THAT 24%.

If God help us, hell reigns upon the earth and Hellary is elected POTUS, what does that make Bill? First man? How would the press address this? "The President and first man Bill Clinton were in Washington today.." lol!

"Now now, we may have lost New York, Philidelphia, Boston, Washington, Miami, Seattle, Detroit, and Topeka to terror attacks, but we still have lots and lots of other cities left, so let`s not do anything rash here! My husband and I will discuss what is to be done at tonights Hollywood fundraiser at the White house!"

Did you see where Algore, in a rare moment of candor, said yesterday that he would be more likely to run in 2008 if Hillary! announces?

I think Algore correctly sees that his only shot at the Big Chair is to be the "viable alternative" after Hillary! self-destructs. There is no way he could stand in against a field of young and vigorous candidates because he is a fossil and a joke. But if he can get Hillary! to "weed the garden", so to speak, Algore can take over after all other opposition has been removed.

I think Kerry has the same idea, but will not be quite as ruthless about it as Algore.

If I were a betting man (and I am!), I would put my money down as Algore being the Donk nominee in 2008, to lose to a Republican-To-Be-Named-Later.

I am in that 24% because I think that it is a mistake to describe Hillary! in conventional political terms. I think she is consumed by the desire to sieze as much power for herself as possible. This would naturally make her a liberal, because liberals increase government power, except I think she is well beyond that.

The one thing Hillary! cares about is Hillary!. The best description of her political type would be "Hillaryista", because that is all that matters.

How would you see Evan Byah playing in this? I think you're right about Gore circling like a hungry buzzard and I do think Hillary will self destruct. But, I was figuring a young Donk hero would sail into town and be viewed as "electable" like Kerry.

Hillary!'s Job #1 in 2007 is going to be to destroy all the young Donk heros, including Evan Byah and Barack Obama and the like. I think she will accomplish this task and then self-immolate when people start seriously looking at her as The Next President of the United States...

Her great service to her country will be to eliminate any reasonable Donk alternative.

This should be entertaining. I hope the Republicans don't destroy themselves in the primaries as you have predicted Hillary will do to the Donks.

It's only among "adults". This is a tip to the truth of the fact that because of caller ID and "Do not call" lists the number of people who answer these polls that, actually vote, is getting smaller and smaller. Oh I'm sure that the beast's numbers are low, but two years out these numbers are meaningless. If they had any relationship to reality they would also show up in Senate race numbers, at least to some degree. But her NYS senate race numbers are steady. So are the pollsters saying that New Yorkers are so different from the rest of the "adults" that there can be not effect?

I say give the Dims all the spotlight for the primaries. And by that, I mean let Mia T run Hillary's campaign. ^_^
