A boastful Barry Bonds said if he passes Babe Ruth that his place in history would be secure.
Asked if he would consider himself better than Ruth if he vaults ahead of the New York Yankees legend for second place on the all-time home run list, Bonds said: "I don't know yet, but the numbers speak for themselves."
The embattled Bonds moved within one home run of Ruth for the No 2 spot, but it was in a losing cause as San Francisco lost 9-5 to Philadelphia on Sunday.

From 1916-1918, Ruth's numbers were comparable to Walter Johnson's. Until Whitey Ford broke it, Ruth set the record for scoreless innings pitched in the World Series at 29 and change. He won something like 94 games in his career [including pitching for the Yankees in 5 appearances]. Did I miss 'Battling Barry' closing in on those numbers?
Meaning that white pitchers are easier to hit? What are you talking about?

Denis Leary said that there were two reasons Bonds could never be the player that Ruth was. For the first nine years of his baseball career, Ruth was a pitcher, and a damn good one to boot.
The other reason was drugs. The Babe never did steriods. He was drunk all the time.

Bonds deserves more than just the asteris. If its true that he pumped him self up with roids (which I believe to be true), then he deserves to be stricken from the history books. Period.
Bonds is no where near the man Ruth was. Never will be either.

We know who Babe Ruth is over here. Barry Bonds only received mention from the BBC because of his steroid use.

I was listening to the radio on a rather lengthy drive this afternoon and the news came on between Rush segments. The news reader said that in yesterdays game Bonds hit a home run and it was caught by a US serviceman - The serviceman is going to keep the ball but Bonds said he would NOT sign it - what a creep !!!!!!!!
Early in the game, some fans along the apron in leftfield unfurled a sign that said: "Ruth did it on hotdogs & Beer, Aaron did it with class, How did YOU do it?''

I believe that he is referring to the fact that pool of great pitchers was limited by segregation. Some of the best pitchers of the day were not allowed to compete in MLB, but instead were restricted to the Negro Leagues. Had they been allowed to play in the MLB, then some of the White pitchers would have undoubtedly been replaced by some of the Blacks and overall pitching quality would have improved. Better quality pitching would probably have resulted in fewer home runs for Babe Ruth.
Political correctness says that since Babe Ruth played during the segratated era, he didn't face the best pitchers in baseball, only the best white pitchers.
There's no end to debates like this, because you figure Babe Ruth never played a night game, which is supposed to make a difference, players travel coast to coast at odd hours now, and in Babe's day, they took trains and didn't have such tiring travel schedules, etc. The first few years of Babe's career it was still the dead ball era, etc. etc. You can take the numbers and make any argument. \

\I dont' support Bonds at all, however, I think if he never used steroids, he would be at about 625-650 career homers, he just woulnd't be threatening all time records.
I figured that was his/her point, but then how many black pitchers has Bonds faced in his career? And how many of them were so good that they had even a minor impact on any modern player's home run totals?
