The Carter presidency gave us an Iran ruled by mad mullahs, the Panama Canal threatened by a military dictatorship (later fixed by Bush I), and Communism creeping its way up through Central America. When Reagan was elected, Nicaragua was communist, El Salvador was being pushed to the brink in a Civil War, Guatemala teetered on the edge, and Honduras's borders were threatened by Nicaragua. Castro's conquistadors pushed communism in Africa using Soviet equipment in places like Angola and Mozambique. The Soviets were winning in Afghanistan. The Iranian students held American citizens taken from the US embassy for 444 days, while Carter worried about who would be on the tennis court, how far he could jog, and whether he could fend off an attack by a rabbit as he floated on a lake. Since leaving office, he's helped North Korea dodge the first efforts to stop its nuclear program even upsetting the Clinton administration. He's contributed nothing of substance to the national debate other than his own self-righteous and mean-spirited attacks on president Bush. He is the worst ex-president in the history of our country a record that matches his terrible term in office.
