Joe Malchow drew our attention to this astonishing article in today's New York Times, in which the Times sticks up for Zarqawi, defending him against what the Times regards as unfair criticism of his weapons-handling technique in the video released by the U.S. military last week:
The weapon in question is complicated to master, and American soldiers and marines undergo many days of training to achieve the most basic competence with it. Moreover, the weapon in Mr. Zarqawi's hands was an older variant, which makes its malfunctioning unsurprising. The veterans said Mr. Zarqawi, who had spent his years as a terrorist surrounded by simpler weapons of Soviet design, could hardly have been expected to know how to handle it.
Unbelievable. I suppose they could have defended Zarqawi further by noting that his weapon of choice is the knife.
The Times also said they think that releasing the video footage wasn't effective propaganda because Zarqawi looks "clean and plump." (Really, I'm not making this up.) Okay, here's an idea: how about if we haul Khalid Shaikh Mohammed out of whatever cell he's being kept in and release a video of him? I doubt that he's looking too "clean and plump" these days. Do you think the Times would like that propaganda effort better? No, I don't either. Other than waving a white flag, it's hard to think of anything the military could do of which the Times would approve.
This was posted on Powerline by John Hinderacker and I thought it was interesting, and apalling, and wanted to post it here. If this is NOT ok, please delete. Otherwise, please read and shake your head in complete dismay. NYTimes - NYSlimes - Terrorist Appeasers.
Not All See Video Mockery of Zarqawi as Good Strategy
By C. J. CHIVERS
Im not sure I want my terrorists clean and plump...I like my lawyers that way but not my terrorists
I want him dead and cold.
I didn't think the video was that bad;

So the NYT thinks it's not appropriate to show Zarqawi for the incompetent little fat boy that he is. I truly am shaking my head. I have met the enemy, and it IS the NYT.
How the hell does this fish wrapper stay in business!!!!
It is truly stunning, isn't it. The beat up our troops all the time on their front page, and now they praise Zarquari. I do just shake my head in complete dismay. I do NOT understand how they have any advertisers anymore; any reasonable human being would have pulled their advertisements long ago, but this story tops them all. The NYTimes supports Zarquari.
I suppose Zarqawi's unfamiliarity with the weapon also explains his swinging it to his left after he has finished firing it and, in the process, pointing it chest-high at at least one of his fellow terrorists.
I heard Hinderaker & co discussing this on their radio show today...truly unbelievable.
You can catch them lunch times on Saturday broadcasting on line at - (Northern Alliance Radio)

MISTER Zarkawi?? They call this piece of slime MISTER?
I hope they go broke tommorrow.
Yup, they give him (Zarkawi) more respect that they give President Bush; who I think they sometimes refer to just as Bush. Typical NYTimes; and as I said above, I do NOT understand how they retain any advertisers. Pinch and his crew are beyond disgraceful. I hope they all go to jail for publishing the NSA story, and I hope that happens SOON! This paper disgusts me.
What kind of rifle was Z firing? It wasn't an M-16 ..
Was it an FAL? Was it full auto?
Is there a single man or woman here at the Freep who couldn't figure out how to operate this weapon in about a minute?

The Times was notorious for referring to Hitler as Herr Hitler and Stalin as Mr. Stalin.
What you are saying is that they havent changed a bit.
