CNN just broke on Anderson Cooper 360 that former NSA Chief General Hayden will replace Goss as the head of the CIA. It hasn't been announced yet by the president though.

Gen. Michael V. Hayden is Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, Washington, D.C. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he is the first person to serve in this position. General Hayden is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the national intelligence program. He is the highest-ranking military intelligence officer in the armed forces.

General Hayden entered active duty in 1969 after earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1967 and a master's degree in modern American history in 1969, both from Duquesne University. He is a distinguished graduate of the university's ROTC program. General Hayden has served as Commander of the Air Intelligence Agency and as Director of the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center. He has been assigned to senior staff positions at the Pentagon, Headquarters U.S. European Command, National Security Council and the U.S. Embassy in the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The general has also served as Deputy Chief of Staff, United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea, Yongsan Army Garrison, South Korea. Prior to his current assignment, General Hayden was Director, National Security Agency, and Chief, Central Security Service, Fort George G. Meade, Md.

This is totally off-subject (well, partially), but what the hell did he do to be awarded a Bronze Star? I thought that was - at the very least - an "in theater" award...and this General's credentials lean heavily towards the academic end of the military.

Unless I missed something, he hasn't been in a combat zone during his career.

This is a direct slap in the face to the Administration's critics. All the talking heads on the radio today were whining that the next DCI would be some neutered wimp who had nothing to do with anything controversial. This guy ran the NSA intercepts program. This is flipping the bird at the Obeys, Durbins, and other traitors.

If you saw the presentation this guy gave on CSPAN about the NSA program you'd have been impressed with the passion he brought to his arguments. My favorite was how he belittled the term "domestic spying". He said he'd been on hundreds on "domestic" flights and never once got off the plane in Afghanistan or Iran.

If this Anderson Cooper scoop is true, kudos to the President for upping the ante. This is close to "all in".

It doesn't happen with every nomination, but with this nomination, the Roberts nomination, Dr. Rice's nomination, etc., the quality of people nominated is incredible. If it wasn't for the couple of goofs (like the Harriet Myers nomination), I think people would widely credit the Bush administration as having some of the most competent people ever nominated (though they are still not close to being as good as the founders).
