Betrayed Conservatives
Logic Times ^ | 04-29-06 | Dan Hallagan

The Left’s hatred of George W. Bush has no rival...

...or so it once seemed. But not so fast. There is a new breed of GWB hater: the Betrayed Conservative, a creature of surprisingly intense emotions for a member of the rational Right. The Betrayed Conservative is good news and bad news for the conservative movement. The good news is that there are vocal, passionate conservatives out there – large numbers of them – unwilling to accept anything less than sound conservative policy out of Washington. They are angry and active and have imposed some measure of discipline on that exasperating collection of spineless Republicans in the nation’s capital. At the drop of a bad Supreme Court nominee or immigration bill, the Betrayed Conservative explodes with the sort of colorful epithets that would make Al Franken blush. And make no mistake, Bush is their whipping boy, and they rarely stop at forty lashes.

The bad news is that Betrayed Conservatives are a political disaster. Betrayal involves a breach of confidence, but in the history of American conservative politics there has never been any confidence to breach, never been a reliable tradition of conservative policy in Washington implemented by principled public servants. Such animals have rarely walked the halls of the Capitol Building, and when they appear, they are hunted down by both the rabid Left and vacillating Right with the viciousness of ritual murder. Such creatures of principle – Newt Gingrich for example – threaten all pure politicians.

I don't guess the invasion has made it to Alaska yet, but don't worry it will before long. Then you will understand.

Alaska has a few invaders already. Perhaps after you read the rest of my comments, you'll understand my opinion. Apparently, the old term "pet" (as in "pet issue") was misinterpreted to mean by you, and another, that I didn't share concerns about the illegal alien issue. IMO, a pet issue is the same as saying, "your favorite issue", "the most important issue to you". It was not meant to be an insult.

Those so worried about Conservatives abandoning RINO's and "R's" losing "control" ought to busy themselves by pushing, pulling, or slapping those RINO "lawmakers" into shape for more conservative principles.

You're making a key assumption here based upon facts not necessarily in evidence.

100% hands down correct.

I will add that I truly despise the shortsightedness of such people for the destruction they cause to the entire country. The "My way or the highway" attitude is our greatest failure.

Inevitably, in my 54 years, I've noticed that those who insist on all or nothing usually get nothing.

Isn't THAT the truth! :)

So now the schmuckerheads are moving to marginalize the conservatives within the Republican Party the same way their counterparts on the other side of the isle marginalized the conservatives in the ranks of the Democratic Party.

ECM's comment was directed at me (re: pet issue). Not sure why ECM pinged you to it.

Also, your comment #80 was excellent and so true.

This story doesn't mention the Betrayed Conservative's cousin, the Betrayed Faux Conservative. The Betrayed Faux Conservative can be identified by certain traits, such as whining about Bush killing Iraqis when he couldn't have cared less about Clinton killing Serbians.

It is what LBJ told me in 1968. When I asked how he managed to get liberal programs passed that FDR tried and failed to pass, he said he could not have done it with out conservative help. He said it was the Goldwaterite position of throw out the RINOs and go for all or nothing that got Goldwater nothing and LBJ everything.

The way I see it is that 1.) While it is true that LBJ couldn't have done the Great Society without the Republican'ts, 2) Once again it was RINOs failing to do the right thing (WHICH IS FIGHT) that passed these disasters.

More shameful is that the 1960s RINOS (who bent over and spread their fat white ass cheeks for the Democrats) were in the minority.

The 2000 RINOS have the MAJORITY... and they are so weak, so ineffectual, so WORTHLESS, that they have allowed the MINORITY to dictate, even CHANGE, the rules on voting procedure! They have failed us, and our country. They must go.

If worse comes to worse, we vote for some of them--if they are for the important issues. And most importantly (for them at lea$t) is withhold ALL money to the RNC. Only give money to Weldon, Tancredo, and others who GET IT!!!

I used to wonder why the party hacks seemed to despise conservatives as much if not more than the leftists on the other side - I wonder no longer.

The GOP party hacks hated RWR as well. It took a Jimmy Carter administration to motivate the GOP base to go over the head of the party faithful & nominate him.

Is it alright with you if I vote for conservatives regardless of their party affiliation?

Well, when I vote for the guy twice, defend him even when he pulls
off some real mis-steps, contribute $ to the cause...
and the out of the blue, I get called a "vigilante"...
well, that's one way friendships bust up all the time.

I'll still be voting Republican in the fall.
But I certainly understand why some folks have gone sour on
The First Illegal Immigrant President.

Even if I respect him for putting the chokehold on domestic terrorism
and getting two great appointees to The Supreme Court.

"Ronald Reagan called Jimmy Carter "Mr. Deficit". The Republican "Contract with America" called for a Balanced Budget Amendment.
Where are those Republicans?"

They fell in love with taking golf trips to Scotland by lobbyists. Tom Delay might have been culturally conservative but a budget cutter he wasn't. Or at least not since Bush was elected.

But if Hillary or any other rat rings your bell

I'm sure your type likes Hillary, but that's not what I want to lead our nation.

However, I am disappointed in the path the Republican Party has taken in the past years.

It really doesn't matter whether people are liars or fools. They're pissed at the republican party. I'll warrant most of them aren't gullible enough to go with the GOP right or wrong. You've used the "elect us or a democrat will get it". It's worked, and it's gotten us just about the same national condition as the democrats. Pretty soon only the very stupid will continue to fall for it.

Vote for a third party with conservative credentials. They can't win? Who cares? Election of our political leaders is not a football game. If you "stay with one that can win" you may just find yourself having won a socialist Balkan state.

OR, get the mavericks (near the majority, now) back in line with conservative principles. Otherwise, lay off the malarkey.

So what are you saying ,we can win the elections with a party of Lincoln Chafees. We sould be grateful then with just 20,000,000 abortions! When do you say enough?

I liked the '64 Goldwater platform. If I could throw a switch and get it implemented, I would. But it wasn't salable to a majority of voters then and it wouldn't be salable to a majority of voters now. Two elections with one state margins of victory, and that means a "winning majority" of people want more conservatism? Ludicrous. Many hearts need to be changed before a Goldwater can elected. Hearts won't be changed toward the right by sitting the midterm out...

We are in the middle of a world war! (that too many American's want to ignore)....

We're not in a world war, yet...But we will be...Currently we are nation building...

If there was really a war on terror, or drugs, the first thing we would do is shut down the borders...The most important thing is our national security...

And George B knows this...That why he sent a ton of OUR border patrol agents to Iraq to guard THEIR borders...

Fact is, our current Republican leadership intends to eliminate our borders...

Problem is, you guys don't want a conservative President...You want the status quo...We will vote for a conservative...You guys need to help us get a conservative instead of bashing everyone who's not a liberal Republican...
